!@#$%^&* Window!!! GRRRR!!!

Recommended Posts

My XT's driver's window fawked up!! :madder: I put it down, and it didn't want to go up under it's own power again. With the help of a friend, I got it almost all the way up and stuck a wedge in it...

And I can't drive the Legacy in the meantime because it doesn't have a shifter in it right now...:banghead:

The motor works, it has no problem pulling the window down, it just won't push it up. Without the wedge in it now, it would fall down about 2 inches. So it's apparently something mechanical and not electrical.

I've never done anything inside a car door before, so can someone advise me as to what the problem could be and how to fix it? I have a Haynes manual, but I'm going to wager that it covers far too wide a range of models to specifically help with the XT.

Thanks a bunch in advance...

That doesnt sound like fun. IT sounds like stripped out gears on part of the mechanism to me but it could also be that the stopper on the door to keep the glass from going further up could have shifted down or something and is restricting the window from going all the way up.

Find a junkyard or fellow USMB owner with a door and swap internals=quickest fix without guesswork.

Window repair is more a PITA that it is anything else, usually 'cause they don't give enough access room to do any work thru. One possibility here is that one of the roller guides on the mechanism has either broke, or came out of it's track. There are 2 types of regulators used on the windows, mechanical scissor type, and a plastic zipper type. Strippage of the gear teeth, or the zipper is a possibility, 'specially if you hear any clicking noise when trying to put window up. Possibility of a bolt/rivet has came loose and allowed the piece to move off kilter. About all you can do to troubleshoot it, is to pull the door trim off, and do a thurough inspection of the components. A bit difficult to do armchair diagnosis on it, but there's somethings to look for.....

Another option might be that a bolt on the regulator arm came loose. Hold the glass with one hand and give the door a brisk shake back and forth, listening for rattles. If you hear something rattling around in the bottom of the door, it is probably a bolt that came loose. Find it and replace it in it's original position. If not, listen for some flopping. That will tell you if it's a stop, or an adjustor arm.... Good luck.

i looked at an xt6 window, it has a cable that moves the window up and down. the cable sheath is retained by white plastic clips, and a little clip rides up and down on the exposed part of the cable, and is connected to the bottom of the window frame.

there is a spring that is under tension when the window is down, and that helps the cable take the window up.

suppose the spring is not working, broke, disconnected?

pop the door panel off and have a look-see.

if you want to keep the plastic moisture barrier intact, undo the clips that hold the doorhandle to the rod mechanisms, so you dont have to rip yout plastic af you yake it completely off

Well, I tried to get one from a (sort of) local guy... about 2 hours away, the one I pulled from his junk XT Turbo was worse than mine, and we tried aimlessly to fix mine, and, needless to say, it didn't work...

So, as someone as impatient as me usually does, I'm simply going to head to the dealer tomorrow and pick up a new one for a pretty penny.

My Legacy is in pieces in the garage and cannot be driven, so I really need this car to work good and work good NOW!

Okay... new regulator in. My XT has a window in it now!!!

However, I have one last little problem... It's an auto up-and-down window. Auto down is fine, but auto up keeps going up and up until the regulator won't let it go any farther and then I can hear the motor keep tryin to push it up.

Do I hafta time that motor initially or something? I hear some Toyotas need their window motors hooked up for 10 seconds, then pulled, then installed...
