I know we all hear of people saying Subaru trannies are like glass. well i'm thinking about putting a JDM EJ20T into my RX for ice racing season. The engine is in a Legacy Turbo, and runs. I'd like to use the RX tranny so i don't have to piss around with tranny mounts and drive shafts. But..is the RX tranny likely to hold 250-260 hp?? simbey1982 Posted October 7, 2005 Share Posted October 7, 2005 You can swap in the stuff from a cable assembly to any EJ tranny...i took the clutch fork and stuff from an old 91 and put it on a 2002 RS tranny and the cable works great. Though if you get a transmission from a turbo EJ series they are diffrent and will need hydraulic. Yeah im not sure how the old stuff mounts up so you would need custom mounts and such...the transmission might be physically larger too Also check the Retrofitting forum for the EJ swap you may have to do Axels and the whole shebang if you need any tips PM me Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Even when you downshift and lock up all 4 tires, it doesnt take anything for your tires to slide. I think it'll be fine. Snowman Posted October 7, 2005 Share Posted October 7, 2005 I'm running a 92 legacy tranny behind my EJ22 conversion right now, and it was WAYY less work than making the EA tranny fit the engine. Get an early model that has the cable activated clutch (sorry I don't know when they switched, but I can tell you that my 96 Legacy has a cable activated clutch). The transmission mount was a piece of cake to weld up. I mocked up the tranny in the car with the engine bolted down, tacked the EJ mounts on my crossmembers, then removed the whole assembly and welded it together. You will have to run EA82T front axles to mate up with the legacy tranny. For my wagon, I had the forward section of the EJ driveshaft shortened one inch, which may be a little bit too much as far as strength - the splines don't go ALL the way into the tranny. You'll also have to get the EJ rear diff that matches the ratio in the tranny. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

And all that really needs to happen is shorten the prop shaft?? I was thinking that i'd have to replace the front axles and rear driveshaft. If it's not that big of a deal..i'll use the EJ tranny forsure. Especially since the tranny i'll be using is a Legacy Turbo tranny, which has the hardened gear set. archemitis Posted October 7, 2005 Share Posted October 7, 2005 i only have 150 hp stock, pushing it through a ea 4 speed. beating the hell out of it every chance i get, on the road mostly lately. circle burnouts, clutch drops, shifting through thre gears spining the rear (1) tire. i havent had any problems grinding off gears. but iceracing... dont those always loose 3rd, honda toyota subaru, whatever you got, i think your gonna break trannies. i guess they look the same inside, same width gears, same materials(presumably). id try it. But...there is a point where the gears and shafts and everything inside the tranny cannot physically withstand the torque produced. I suppose certain WJM was making close to the same power/torque levels with his 1.8L motor...and his tranny held up just fine. However, or what it's worth. if it is a relatively easy swap...Shortening the prop shaft is no problem, if the front driveshafts slip on, and just fabbing up a mount...that really is not all that difficult, and might be worth the little bit of extra work. Surely you will spend the same amount of time mucking with that as you would fabricating an adapter plate...so it's probably a toss up Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
