Guest GeneralDisorder
Ok - I've been working on it, here's the pics so far. The stock chrome bumper was WAY too big for the A bar to fit on, and there was really no good way to mount the black plastic style bumper on my car, since the 5 MPH shocks mount to a different assembly, which is welded into the frame/body. So I kept the shocks, and built my own bumper. It's one peice - solid 3/8" carbon steel plate. Welded to the original bumper shocks, so it mounts exactly the same. To this plate, I welded the hangers for the A bar as well, so it's all pretty solid in there. What do you guys think? I still need to do something about turn signals - anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking I'll weld some tubes to the front of the bumper on either side of the A bar, just to give it some beef. http://www.ultimatevirgin.com/cropperr/new_bumper/bumperfront.jpg http://www.ultimatevirgin.com/cropperr/new_bumper/bumperside.jpg GD
Guest calebz
Wire the turn signal in to the existing corner/marker lights looks good!
Guest LostWater
But I considered using a C-Channel steel similar in dimensions to what you have. I think yours is suitable and maybe easier to make than what I have envisioned. Mark
Guest E Zap
John Mudrat would be proud of that bumper! How long till the lift gets there?
Guest GeneralDisorder
I thought about the corner markers - but isn't there some law about the color of turn signals? I wonder if I could get away with a colored bulb... As for easy - well, it wasn't bad really - used a torch to heat up the steel, put it in a REALLY big vise, and then bend away. I don't have a break to bend things with, but it's not that hard to bend peices this size. Took a bit of fiddling to get it the right shape. It has four bends in it. The bumper weighs about 60 - 70 pounds without the A bar. Thanks for the encouragment Zap - I want to order my lift soon, but I'm waiting till I have the 4WD in so I know exactly what to ask for. I haven't decided whether I'm keeping the AC or not, and now that I've seen the differences in the front bumper mounting, I want to see what other surprises Subaru built into my car. I'm hoping there aren't any more strange things like that, but if there are, I'll just have to improve upon the car again like I did for the bumper GD
