Ah, the smell of fuel in ones exhaust.

How does one lean out a Hitachi carb on an '83 EA71 with California emissions package?

Very good question, since it is my car (well eventually) I'd like to know too. Is it the blatant screw under the air cleaner that you can see without really having to remove it completely?

Try a different O2 sensor. They don't always throw a code when they start going bad.
