Caboobaroo Posted October 24, 2005 Share Posted October 24, 2005 you can swap in an EA81 1800cc OHV engine and tranny into it. You'll have to modify the shift linkage a little or cut a bigger hole in the trans tunnel for the linkage to fit but other then that, it should be a drop in, plug in and go type deal. Free Range Posted October 30, 2005 Share Posted October 30, 2005 easiest, get another ea71(1600), gutless, bulletproof, good mpg, cheep, bolts right up. harder, ea81(1800), keep all sensors from the 1600 with car and harness, will have to mod the belly pan (for steering or exhaust?), or find a 80' or 81' brat(only) with the 1800 and d/r 4spd to get the right x-member, then you could get the factory d/r4 spd linkage too (wouldn't need to cut/weld anything). will need to match bellhousings to trans if you keep the old trans... EJ 2.2 into gen one car: not for the squemish. yeah the motor mounts right up, but nothing else does, and with 3mm of clearence at the valve covers to boot. can anybody say 'hot knife' -N Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

75subie Posted November 2, 2005 Share Posted November 2, 2005 your best bet would be a weber, accel super coil, accel plug wires, ea81 2wd electric disty swap, and maybe a hi-flo exhaust.if you want to go into the motor, a delta cam would help to.it would be a sleeper, caboobaroo did all this, and had his brat set up in RWD. Caboobaroo Posted November 2, 2005 Share Posted November 2, 2005 well actually, my Brat was RWD when I got it, I just slammed it and I could do posi burnouts for days. 75subie is right about all of the upgrades. I did the 2wd disty swap, put Accel plugwires on it, an Accel Superstock coil which isn't the greatest but if you mount it vertical instead of horizontal like it is stock, you won't have a problem. I also got ahold of a very rare JDM high compression EA71 from a friend and put that in there. I then added a Holley 5200 which is a Weber knockoff, an afternarket exhaust which was a good brand of cherry bomb and some straight pipe, new clutch and some EA82 steels with 185/70R13's on there. I have pics of the engine and the car if you'd like to take a gander. Once I had dropped that engine combo in there, it felt much more powerful then the original EA71 that was in it. I'm guessing it was running over 100hp. The sad thing though is I could never get it to run right. It still ran rich and had some timing issues but it sure was a fun little car. This one is labeled for the disty conversion. As for a Weber, a conversion kit for an EA81 will work for it as well. The glasspack brand was a Blue Streak IIRC with a giant chrome tip on it. I got it from a friend who had it on an '86 Scirocco and he gave it to me for helping him with some work. I was gonna put it in my diesel rabbit but decided the Brat needed a new muffler...
