Electric Supercharger?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Like many of us, I would like to increase the "Oomph" on my 92 Subaru Loyale. I have a K&N air filter which helps a little, and will soon be wrapping the exhaust with insulating header wrap to reduce the exhaust restriction and engine compartment temp.

I wondered about a supercharger (blowing more air into the engine) and wondered why I can't make a high-powered electric blower that forces more air into the engine?

I did a search and found a company that is making an electric supercharger:

http://www.electricsupercharger.com

What do you think?

Can we figgure out a way to make our own?

T.J.

Your EA82 makes approximately 90 HP. Find a 90 HP electric motor, and find an alternator to run it, and sure - anything is possible. Unfortunately, you will lose more than you gain this way - the transfer of mechanical energy to electric energy is a loss, electric motors are niether small enough, nor powerful enough to make this idea a reality. If they were - we would all be doing 90 HP electric motor conversions, and thowing away our EA82's. No timing belts, and 1 moving part! Would be great except you can't carry enough batteries to do you any good, and the 90 HP electric motor would likely way more than several EA82's. Copper windings are REALLY heavy.

These are a gimmick, and a pretty silly one at that.

The really hilarious part is that they get you to remove your stock air filter, and replace with a K&N style - which acounts for the increase in throttle response that makes people *think* it must be working. I'm sure they are making a pretty hefty profit on that little platic tube with a 12v PC fan stuck in it. About once a month somoene posts about these. I sure wish people would stop looking for a free lunch.... or maybe do a little searching through old posts or something.

If an electric blower could do any good, car makers would have used them long ago as a cheap "turbo" like device, given it some fancy name, and jacked the price of the car up 2 or 3 thousand..... Just one more drain on your car's already overloaded electrical system.

You would get more from just the K&N filter by itself, cause you wouldn't have that silly fan motor, and blades restricting your intake path.

suppose you could use an electric leaf blower, and a higher amp ca converter(like the ones that could handle a microwave such as for an rv) ans a good alternator.

it could be turned on and off witha switch, but tou would have to enrichen the fuel to keep it from running lean and getting hot.

suppose you could wire up some sort of injector, as ling as you had enough psi behind the whole fuel system.

a wastegate could be fashioned ffom some sort of spring valve, the boost could be controlled with a potentiometer.

just some ideas.....
