For The 100th Time!!!!

Recommended Posts

Ok, I searched and searched, then searched some more and didn't really find the answer.

I have a '79DL front wheel drive carbed with the dreaded "Dead Spot" whenever i "gun" it or try to start actually moving. Light feathering and It can be dealt with, but worried about safety, cause when cold, it can and has stalled.

checked tank, looks brand new inside. several new fuel filters and finally i have no rust in them (must of been from fuel lines). sprayed carb cleaner (no vac leaks that i could hear) and wd 40'd the whole carb. There is a vac line hanging down on the passenger side footwell, It does suck air and when i plug it, very little to no change. It has 55000 original miles and is in great shape. I want to keep it. Was is the cheapest fix, to most expensive (reliable) fix?

This car will start very easy every time, reguardless of how long i sit it. I will Idle just fine too. Even in nuetral when I gun it, the dead spot arises, but obviously not at bad.

HELP!!!!!!!!

Sounds like your carb may just need to be cleaned out a bit.I suspect that your mid range jet is a little plugged from the sound of it.Since you said that the gets sluggish when you gun it.Check your plugs and see what they look like I am betting that it is leaning out when it decides to die in the cold weather. What carb is on your car?

alright... the accelerator pump sprays a bunch of gas into the carb when you "gun" it... so it won't bog down with lack of fuel...

its easy to check... take off your air can... then open up the choke with your finger...(it should be open anyway if the car is on... but it doesn't have to be... i'd leave it off...)

then there is a linkage right out front of the carb... its got a spring coil around it... you can't miss it... its the biggest, most accecible linkage on the carb... now just pull up on it... and look into the carb when you do it... you should see a bunch of gas squirt out into the barrel... if you don't see any gas then thats your problem...

Ok I will try that, I only have computer access at work for now, but I will get back.

Thank you

That would be my second guess.I forgot about the accel pump which would definately make sense. That would be a good bet. What carb do you have on you car?

I'm not sure what type of Carb, probably the original.

Only things replace on it are plugs, wire, brake shoes, tires.

I even had original AM only radio, until i replaced it last week.

I would change the plugs back to NGK's and go over the whole ignition system. A weak spark can cause this problem as well. In particular, i'd check the breaker point gap (in the distributor) and check the condition of the contacts. Depending on your coil, points can have to be replaced up to every 15,000kms i find.

  • 3 weeks later...

Because you are dealing with a car that is now an antique in excess of 20 yrs old, and most likely having its original prats in the carb, With very Low miles on it, You know the thing has sat a good portion of its Life...If the accell pump is acting funny, and you think you have fixed it , it will be temporary...All the rubber parts in the carb are hard and brittle....

My suggestion is to buy a re-build Kit and Re-Build the carb this winter while you say it will be down anyhow...You have a carb that is most likely in great shape still, but the more you run it the more it will be prone to have those rubber tidbits internaly falling apart and clogging a port...I don't recommend running seafoam through the system till you re-build it....Everything in the carb is in a delicate state of being right now from old age, and seafoam is a great cleaner....that has a high probability of disintigrating those tidbits...

I voice this From Experience......:(

Good Luck And Have fun with it....I just got another 2 Door Coupe Myself...

It won't stay stock though.... :brow:

Later, John
