door lock

Recommended Posts

ok, so i just noticed that my door lock mechanism was really easy to turn... a little too easy, it doesn't lock anymore. my driver door lock has been going downhill for a while now. it went from not having to hold the handle down to having to use the key to lock it. what can i check once taking all of the trip apart to get this working again before my door doesn't lock at all??

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your lock is probably shot. By the time the wafers get stuck enough to allow the lock to just turn the wafers are worn out. But just in case go down to the local hardware store pick up a tube of dry graphite powder and spray inside your lock (do not use oil or wd40 they will atract dust). If that doesnt work its time to pick up a lock set at Car Quest . Make sure you do all this with the door open so if the key gets stuck you can pull the lock and get your key back. roosofallevil:banghead:

I'm not sure what's happening from your description?

Is your lock just turning with out effecting the latches?

If this is what's going on, your nut on the backside of the lock just fell off or your linkage is disconnected?

It would turn easy if this happend.

Generally a lock will be more difficult to turn when the lock wears out as you are carving new tracks for the wafers to turn in.

Being basically Cheap,

I'd pull off your interior panel and have a look inside before I'd run out and purchase a new lock. You'd have to pull it off anyway, if you purchase a lock.

Being basically real Cheap and not much of a Gentleman,

If your LHS is worn out, I'd swap RHS and LHS locks?---only Gentlemen :brow: unlock the passenger side (RHS)anyway?

Food for thought?
