what is a GL10?

Boz, I have an '84 GL10 coupe. It's 2wd with auto. It didn't cover the wheels, sunroof, cargo rack, black out or paint treatment. List price in 1984 was just over $12,000.

 

Yes, it is an option designation. Just like DL/GL. Most GL10's have all power accy's, nicer interior and power moonroofs, in '84 they came with non-power sunroofs as an additional option. In the EA82 models most/all Turbo models had all the GL10 options.

Yes, its an options package.. For EA82s it meant

 

-better front seats with height adjustment

-black trim (door handles and such) on 4wd models

-slightly larger tires(this one never gets mentioned, but it says so in my owners manual)

-digidash

-sun roof

-rear head rests(in wagons, at least)

-lots were turbo, but not all

 

Oh hell, I know theres more, but my brain just turned off.. someone else will have to complete the list.. I have learned that when the brain turns off, its time to stop typing

The tire size is mandated by transmission.

 

2wd GL's have 175/70R13.

2wd DL's have 155/70R13.

4WD GL's have 185/70R13.

4WD DL's have 175/70R13.

 

Not all GL10's have rear headrests. (this is an additional option)

 

Things like roof racks and rear air deflectors on wagons are also additional options.

 

The following info is taken directly from the '84 and '86 sales brochures.

'84;

These are beyond the standard GL options

AM/FM ETR 6 speaker stereo,

PS

PW(only available as PW Pmirror option pkg)

Cruise control,

A/C,

Digi dash

Sunroof-pop up style.

 

Turbo coupes came with all the GL10 options and the Turbo wagons came in GL or GL10.

 

'86

 

The power moon roof was only available in the turbo.

GL10's were turbo's except in the 4dr sedan which had the option of non-turbo.

Digi dash only came with the turbo's.

Trip computers.

Power door locks.(Were standard but available on other models.)

Folddown rear seat.

Height adjustment on drivers seat only.

Electronic height control for suspension.

 

That's about it.

In 1987 the pneumatic suspension was available only with automatic transmission, according to my owner's manual.

 

GL-10 sedans also usually came with the folding armrests. My window sticker lists N/C for the rear headrests, (wagon) digidash, intermittent multiple-time-delay wipers, etc. The only options were the Rusty Jones protection group (ugh), the upgraded stereo/cass, and "special paint" in Mica Red Pearl.

The GL10 designation lumped a bunch of stuff under the same name, standard, and added some model-exclusive options. You couldn't get blackout trim, a height-adjustable seat, or a digidash on a lesser trim level. Also, since a GL retailed for a couple of hundred dollars more with all the options, the GL10 was a much more economical way to go at the higher end.

 

As for the RX, there wasn't much of a price difference but the RX was only available with a couple of colors (and in one body style, coupe or 3-door, depending on year).

WagonsOnly - you must be talking about EA82's cause I have an 84 wagon with just about everything - not badged tho. Digidash, PW, PM, CC, AC, Velour interior, sunroof. It WAS a 2WD 5 speed, but is now a 4 speed D/R 4WD with 3" custom lift :burnout:

 

Oh - and has anyone actually seen an EA81 wagon that was badged as a GL-10? I want pics, cause I have never seen one, and I don't believe they existed. I have seen coupe's, and sedans - plenty of them in fact, but NEVER a GL-10 wagon in the Gen 2 body style. Maybe I just haven't seen one?

I stand corrected. The digidash and the sunroof were stand-alone options. But the GL-10 package debuted in 1983 and lasted until '89, and had most of the goodies included in the price. There was also something called the "turbo-10" introduced in 1983, not sure how long it lasted, but according to rumor it only was available with the wagon and an auto tranny. I've never seen one but I did see an ad in a magazine from that era.

Well - all EA81 turbo's came with the auto 4WD tranny, so that is in fact not a rumor. As to being only in wagons, I don't know. Never seen a turbo-10 either. I'm guessing most of those have already blown a digi-dash, and went to the crush-pile. In fact - I'll bet that's what did in many a turbo wagon or Brat - dash goes, and after a while the owner just sends them off the JY. Cost too much for a dash (or can't get one at all), and who want's a car with no guages? There's a few turbo's around (very few) with analog dash's, so those are still with us, but the digi's are getting hard to find from 83, 84.

I don't think the 83 GL-10 had this interior, or maybe it was an option also....

 

this came out of a GL-10 Sedan...

and they all live in Mountain Grizzly now.

 

I also have an extra set of panels from a sedan, and the front seats (same cloth) are in my Turbo Brat now.

 

the Turbo Brats never came with the digital dash thankfully....

 

and if you ever end up parting out that coupe Ken, I'll take the door panels :brow:

This is a brochure from the board.

 

It confirms that the GL-10 package existed in an EA-81 and lists the options that it came with.

 

I think your wife is right.:slobber:

 

A little upholstry cleaner wouldn't hurt the griz any?---Well it might take away a little character.

I have two (2) 1983 GL-10 wagons in my back yard. In common they have...

4WD 4SPD D/R

A/C

P/S

P/W

P/M

C/C

Sunroof

Digi dash

Six speakers

 

Things that are different....

One car has a roof rack and a rear deflector

The other one has a factory block heater and finned rocker trim.

 

The door panels are the same as my '83 GL.

So I know they exist.

I've had a couple GL-10 cars, and have seen several in junkyards. Though most of the GL-10 goodies were options on GLs or other cars, if a car has all of the following, it tells me that car is a GL-10 (at least for EA82 cars):

 

- Upgraded interior (height adjustable driver's seat, fold-down rear seat in sedans, rear headrests in wagons, cloth headliner)

- Digital Dash with Trip Computer

- Gravel Guards in front of the rear wheels.

- Blackout trim panel between tail lights on sedans.

- Power Windows, Power Mirrors, Power Locks.

 

I've never seen an EA82 GL-10 without ALL of those things. Most have other options as well, but they all start with those basics.
