I have a chiltons, but i dont trust it. a 87 hatch motor should come with the same motor as a brat right? 84 hp? because there is a listing for a 2dooor gl with only 75 hp. im confused is that the 2door sedan? and weight... the 2wheel drive hatch is around 2100 lbs right?

When I read the first post, I thought you were talking about the '86-'87 2wd GL Hatchback that came with the EA71 engine, but I guess that'd only be 69-70hp.

my ea71 has more power than that. i got a used engine from japan. it has a different torque and horsepower curve. plus the weber. keeps up with the ea81's and goes everywhere.

The STANDARD hatchback came with the EA71, and although rare, you could get 'em with 4WD (Single range only). I had an 87, confused the HELL out of the guys at the junkyard. One guy ALWAYS tried to tell me it was an 81, until I showed him my registration :-) I've never seen a 2WD GL with an EA71, only with the EA81.

My info says that from 1981 on, all 4wd Hatchbacks had the EA81 including the 4wd STD, but the STD only ever had single range 4wd.

The only years you could get an EA71 2wd GL Hatchback were '86 and '87... they're pretty rare, but I've seen one.

The '84+ EA71s really can keep up with most EA81 cars. My '84 DL Hardtop will chirp the tires (175/70s) going into 2nd gear, and gets over 35 mpg on the highway.
