tailgatewagon Posted November 29, 2005 Share Posted November 29, 2005 ok so ive i was going to make a stomper Gen 1 wagon. well ive decided to go lower insted. my svx gets around awsome in the snow 1+ foot with 225 60 16 snow tires on it and an auto trany that cant figure out what its dooing so the gen 1 will go low also. anyway i know i can cut the springs? dont relly like that idea as it want way more spring to hold some extra weight so what other options do i have. im thinking of going down oh 3 or 4 inches..... thanks would like to end up with 4 to 6 inches or so... tailgatewagon Posted November 29, 2005 Author Share Posted November 29, 2005 oh yea its a 79 GL wagon. and i have the rears figured out. im going to re clock the torshen bars and make new stops for them to shorten there reach as for the front i was thinking of droping in rx springs and cutting them down. since there stiffer.(normaly putting rx spring in would raise the front.... other options i had thought of was threading the strut rod down farther so i can compact the spring more. but i thought the extra would probably blow the strut apart. Man) can elaborate on this for me, but I believe the EA81 struts & springs setup bolt the same as the EA71's, but are alot shorter. He had mentioned how the struts he built gave his '84 wagon a 3" lift, but installed in his Gen1 Brat gave him enough to fit 15's. Stock EA81 struts and springs maybe too much of a drop, but stiffer springs might help out. RenaissanceMan Posted November 30, 2005 Share Posted November 30, 2005 Ya, on the gen 1 those struts only gave me about an inch... so essentially if you keep the stock ea81 struts, you can get like a 2 inch drop, all you have to do is cut off that one bracket that bolts to the knuckle and weld it on the new strut CAREFULLY. -Mike Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Caboobaroo Posted November 30, 2005 Share Posted November 30, 2005 well I lowered my '79 by reclocking the torsion bars in the rear, and I also cut 3 coils from the front springs which still gave it a decent ride in it. The Brat on the other hand went with cranking the torsions down all the way, and removing the front springs totally and the front bumpstops. Ross Posted November 30, 2005 Share Posted November 30, 2005 You can get the springs normalised, and re-hardened in the position where you want them. Then you'll have a shorter, stiffer spring like you want. Most spring shops should be able to help you out cheap. you could give the torsion bar the same treatment if you want the back to be stiffer as well as lower. maximumBRAT Posted December 2, 2005 Share Posted December 2, 2005 I heard of one cat (not on a subie) dampered a tercel with some kinda modded spring compressor (like you use to put a lift on) but that went around to hold the spring completely on both ends.
