Recommended Posts

i know what southern oregon is like, never been to washington..

whats the rent like out there for a 3 bedroom house or apartment? schools any good, have 2 kids...

gas prices, cost of living, etc?

and most importantly, any jobs out there for a auto parts / IT tech?

As to the economy, WA state claims to be "in good shape". WA is like two states really, the populous western corridor from Bellingham south to Vancouver and the sparsley settled area east of the Cascade mountains. Rents around Seattle seem high to me but there are areas where it's more reasonable. Check the local chambers of commerce for more detailed information.

Three states if you count Lewis County. This county operates as if Nixon is still the president.

However, the cost of living is nice and low.

I travel to washington weekly and gas is way higher up there and you have to get out in the cold and pump it yourself! that right there is enough to get me to stay living in oregon! then you add sales tax and its a done deal! oregon is great on property pricing as long as you dont want to live in portland or close to downtown! SE portland and all the small towns around it are very reasonable as long as you dont want Lake O or West Linn! Oregon rocks! Washington is pretty cool! better wheelin spots in Oregon!

No sales tax in Oregon Vs No income tax in Washington

Clark Co. Wa. recently had quite a jump in property values. So rent probably went up as well. My friend gets like $800 a month for her 3 bed room rental in Orchards. (900sqft, 3 bdr, 1.5 bath, 2 car garage)

You have to pump your gas in Washington but have to get out and pay in Oregon (Unless you use a credit card).

Don't know much about the school or jobs situation.

Like edrach says, Check the local chambers of commerce for more detailed information.

I think someone already said it but Sales tax vs. state tax and a bit higher property tax. Also,if its still in effect, there is a multnomah county tax that takes 1% of your yearly income (out of pocket of course) if you live and work in the portland area. As far as seattle I had read somewhere that it was rated 2nd highest in living cost (though that was sometime ago that I read that)

I used to have a nice house in SE portland near Woodstock that went for $675 2bd and a large baesment. So really it just depends on where you live.

Oregon came out a bit ago and said that the job market is the best its been in a while and if they ever do it they are talking about city wide Wi-fi as well as running the max into vancouver. We will see though.

Bellingham Isnt to bad of a place to live with good schools though the job market may not be that great and it is a college town. Though rent isnt bad in the right areas and there is very nice scenery.

Just my 2cents

Hope you make it back though there is nothing like the north west.:drunk:

well, i'm used to pumping my own gas, been doin it all my life, except for the couple eyars i lived in oregon.. lol i acctually prefer to pump my own gas anyways.

would really rather stay away from teh big cities also, i like the peace and quiet of the country/suburbs..

i'll have to find the chamber of commerces website if they have one :)

if i could find a 3 bedroom for $800 or less i'd be happy, as long as i could find a job too, lol.

am definitely thinkin about washington.. then all you norwesters can laugh at rusty wagon

Not having sales tax is great, having a pump jockey pump my gas and take money from the driver window is great too, but the cas cap they put on my roof isn't. It's freezing cold, and mud is easy to find, although much of it is on undeveloped private property. Last time I looked at fuel prices, regular was $2.43 and diesel was $2.75. I pay $475 for a 1 bedroom "townhouse", water and garbage paid, but gas heat, electricity, ect. seperate. Decent 3 bedroomss go for $650+. Not sure about VA since I've never been there, but so. OR has plenty of junkies ("Methford"), bums and other lower life forms. Both my mother and step-father are fully schooled, qualified teachers, and after several years of trying, both have given up on getting teaching jobs in the state because the public schools are in the financial crapper (spending money on football, cutting... you know... education) The employment scene sucks, unless you have a good amount of college on your resume.

spokane is allright if you end up having a good paying job.we pay for our mortgage cheaper than we would pay for rent.and that is 600.they have some community oriented ideas starting ,but lack in the true motivation to do anything about it.the schools a refu cking awesome as far as i am concerned.my daughter is eight and has had awesome teachers in the past couple of years.not bad ,all four seasons, and always needing a new weather man .there are alot of shops here....main dealerships for the eastern washington area....and private....not a bad place to be as long as you get out like you are talking about..who knows .....check it out.

its been 6 months from the time I moved away from the north seattle area- and each month I have been away I more and more want to move back.. I have found nothing out here that I like in comparison.. (but thats because I am used to west WA, and this is very different here)

brier and mountlake terrace are pretty cheap areas that are still close to the major city life- (good for jobs, etc)

either state is a good choice as far as climate though- you cant go wrong in WA and OR!

btw, i cant stand it when people pump my gas for me! I usually tried to find a gas station with lazy attedants, and pump it myself when i was hanging out in eugene :drunk:
