tips on pulling engine/transaxle:'81wagon

Recommended Posts

I'm just about ready to pull the whole assembly. Was wondering if I should take the wgt. off of the whole unit, then pull the tranny cross member off, so it would have more room to tip and clear every thing when I remove it. I am using a cherry picker.

The wagon is a ea'81, 4 whl, dual range. Hope to hook the dual range up to my ea'71 brat.thanks dp.

I dont know if you have done one of these before, but I have found it is easy to remove the engine first, then the tranny- but maybe thats just me!

reason being, is that its kinda a long , and you might run into trouble trying to get the engine and tranny to clear the firewall and the radiator support bars...

besides- if your pulling the engine anyways, just undo the 2 bolts, and the 2 nuts on the lower studs, and the engine will seperate form the tranny!

Dave,

Got Sawzall?:D ..................20 minutes tops!

Depending on what your doing with the donor car it could be a great way to go!

I did it and pulled the engine, crossmember, struts, wheels, tires, tranny all out in one shot.................Simple!

once it's out it is much more managable.:D

Just a thought:cornfuzz:

Good luck!

The Tranny can be removed from under the car with it on jack stands. It's really not all that hard. I wouldn't sugest trying to pull the tranny out from above. I've tried that, with no engine present, and it just didn't work, snagged on too many things, and those Subaru trannies aint small. Best to remove engine first, then drop the tranny out from the bottom. It's really easy with a jack and a block of wood.

I ended up pulling it as a unit. Went really well. I pulled the tranny mount bolts, put a jack under the tranny and lifted it. Pulled the crossmember off and the torsion (?) bar (the heavy round bar). I already had the radiator out. Everything cleared as it came out. I chained to the back pick point, with the wgt. of the tranny, it created the perfect angle for the whole unit to clear . The wagon was up on blocks. This was a field strip exercise, so I brought some plywood so the cherry picker had something to roll on.

The fine art of engineering a project so it can be done by one person.
