Bucking on acceleration when cold, then OK...

87 4wd wagon, carbed Hitachi. Bucks when cold from dead stop until warm, then seems to be OTAY.

 

What is kaput?

 

EA-82, of course...new fuel filter, plugs, air filter.

Sounds like either a choke problem, or an accelerator pump problem. Open your choke up, with the car off of course, look down the barrel of the carburetor and work the throttle lever one full stroke, fairly quickly (Or have a buddy mash it to the floor) You should see a squirt of fuel from a little nozzle in one of the barrels, if you don't, you have a bad accelerator pump.

 

To check the choke, Turn the key on, but dont' start the engine. Have a buddy floor the accelerator and release. The choke plate should slap shut. Now, start the car, and observe the choke plate. After a minute or two, tap the throttle, and it should open a little. After 5-10 munutes of this it should be fully open.

 

Another thing to check, would be the choke heater itself. Turn the key to ON, but dont' start the engine. Wait about 5 minutes and feel the choke housing (Round deal with a wire going to it, on the passenger side of the carb) it should be warm. If it's not, check your choke fuse, it could be blown, or the choke heater is dead.

 

IF you need a new carb, CCR Engines (http://www.ccrengines.com) sells rebuild carbs for about 200 bucks.

 

My 83 did this (And was hard to start in the morning) The choke linkages had gotten gummed up, so I sprayed them all off with some carb cleaner, and then sprayed them with some Tri-Flow (Available at any bike shop) and it all worked again.

Thanks...prolly should start thinking put an SPFI or a rebuilt carb on The Monster anyway...
