Ok... so, for right now we are using MSN to host photo's. Primarily for the ease of use, and ability to show our own pictures. But it does not let us link images to show on the USMB. Well, it does, but it's not easy.

Anyhow, I have stumbled upon a program that i have setup for my club that makes it extremly easy to upload, and view photo's. You can see my photo album here at www.420crew.com//z1m/gallery/

The pro's and con's vs. the gallery and MSN are:

Pro's:

Alot more webspace. Up to 500 meg's of space (that is ALOT of photos')

ALOT easier use than MSN (believe it or not).

NO ADVERTISMENTS! (makes it worth it just for that)

True URL's (picture would be http://www.usmbphotos.com/yourname/yourimage.jpg instead of some long MSN address with a ton of letters and numbers)

You could use your photo's anywhere, show them on the USMB, use it as a personal pic, show your friends and family.

Fully Customizable interface

No Advertisments (did i mention that yet?)

There are more Pro's, but lets get onto the Con's.

Con's:

Its not Free. its not expensive, and I can handle the cost's unless people are willing to chip in. I'm looking at aprox $10/mo for the webspace and $10/yr if i register the domain name (doesnt have to be USMBPhotos.com, just a 1st idea).

You would need to register accounts through me. Accounts will be free. The usage of the service and hosting and everything would be absolutly free for any USMB member who is an ACTIVE and REGISTERED USMB member.

I cant think of any other Con's at this time. We would need to move all the photo's that are already at the MSN site to the new site if this were to take effect. That wont be too hard.

The whole meaning for this post is because this is something i was planning on doing anyway, to better the comunity, but I didnt want to do all this work if it wasnt going to get used. So, input is best... who is interested?

There really are no con's. One big pro is how fast it is. The server's ive been looking at should be plenty fast for what we need. Bandwidth is a concern, since these are images, and they will most likely be on the USMB they will be loaded a few thousand times a week. That can create alot of bandwidth. Ive been looking at a couple servers that give unlimited amount of bandwidth, but they are alittle more pricey.

pfft. if everyone sends you a dollar in the mail (everyone who intends to use it anyway), which I'd be fine with doing, then this wouldn't have to cost you anything but your time.

Hi, Im in, details on how to get it rolling? Paypal account maybe? MSN is much less than ideal, I'd help out with the hosting funds, Bradd

Time is nothing. All i have to do is install it on the main server, and let it run, members manage their own pictures and settings. Only real time would be moderating it.

Sounds good to me, I would like to get my signature back again. The dollar idea works pretty good too. Sure quite a few of us would chip in. Catch ya Laters.

Yea, I'm in! If U have Pay-Pal I will send U $1 a mo. and I'm sure any one who WANTS to use it would be cool with that. It's cool that U are willing to pay for it, but if those who use it are paying for it too I think it's even better;)

I do have paypal. If people want to start donating now, i can get on the ball and register the domain name.

Should we think of something better than USMBPhotos.com?

I was thinking of registering USMB.com, and have a redirect that takes you to the board, but have a sub-domain that is Photos.USMB.com for the photo's.

i would be willing to use and help pay.

Hey brian would this server be a good place to rehost my site. seperate from the photos. like buy my own, along with helping pay for this. i need to start updating it and i really am not to fond of angelfire.com. Do you have any recomendations on easy to use software for making webpages, where to find them and how much? and any good ideas of how to?

Yeah, there are alot of places that you can host your page for under $10/mo. I currently pay $6.50 a month for 100mb of space and i pay $12 a year for my domain name http://www.subaru4wd.net

Do you have instant messenging? If not, email me and i will clue you in on some awesome software and programs to help make your page easier to navigate and better looking.

I think im going to start on this when i get home tonight. If anyone cares to donate, my PayPal email address is Subaru4WD@Subaru4wd.net

No donation too small or too large. It will probably take 16 to 18 hours to get up and running. As soon as I get the domain name registered, it will become active, but it will take about 12 hours for the DNS servers to update, depending on which part of the country (or world) you live on.

Anyhow.... what im thinking of doing is registering http://www.USMB.com When you goto that page, it will direct you automaticly to the USMB, but if you goto pictures.usmb.com, it will take you to the picture's page. We could also run a smaller WHOIS page on a private message board, and have it as whois.usmb.com.... or something. The sky is the limit.

Thanks for the support, I dont get off work until 8pm pst, so i will start as soon as I get home. more input is needed however.

before you go thru with the registration of a domain name, check around, I got my domain name registered for around $6 a yr when i registered for 5 yrs...this was at <a href="http://www.godaddy.com" target="top">http://www.godaddy.com</a>

the more years you register the domain for the cheaper the yearly rate.

And I also am willing to pitch in funds for this! :D

Yeah, ive shopped around. Also the place that i registered my subaru4wd.net and team213.com domain names, gives you a discount for multiple domain names, and multiple years. Not too worried about the domain name costs or even the webserver's costs... more worried about bandwidth.

Ok guys... i registered USMB.net, also signed up for some new webspace that will give us 700mb of space, 35gigs of bandwidth a month, and a bunch of other cool stuff.

Total

$57

Thats for 3 months of service, and 5 years of domain name.

I should have a page up by tomorrow.

Hey Brian, what do you think about if we move the forums over to another bulletin board system, that included picture hosting on board, using the vbulletin program. Once the gold community status winds down here, I am curious if it is worth my time to continue with that tract, if not I'll sell this copy of Vbulletin i bought on eBay or something, I can prolly get most of the license cost back, $140 aint cheap thou. BillyC was really pushing the issue, I let it slip away for now since we got the initial support and since we had the gold status here for so much longer, and then Billy dropped off the boards again.

Anyway I had most of the hosting options planned out and already have the licensed copy of vb, just wondered what your take on it is since youve got people signing up for the much nicer photo service your putting together.

This webserver i just got, doesnt seem up to the task of running something USMB size

for right now, there is a temp URL until the DNS Servers update for USMB.net:

d4080177.u51.infinology.com/

I have setup photos.usmb.net for the photo's page, but you will still need to contact me for an account.

John, catch me on Yahoo next time your on. I think for the time being, EZBoard will do just fine. This will make it easier to keep track of active members and share photo's

I found that when i access the USMB through the domain name (temp URL for now), it doesnt keep me logged into the board. Not even logging in fixes it.

Let me know if you are having the same problem.

ok, I'll go ahead and sell this vbulletin software and delete the test software. I can't afford to have all that money tied up in it if its not going to happen. We were going to set up a paypal donations account, but as you know Billy never did do that, and Im stuck with the bills for all this. Bummer to, we could have a really slick vb system, I had all the work done, just needed to buy the host. I'll send you some cash for this new photo server to offset your costs, once I sell this vb I will have plenty of money to throw around. :)

well the cool thing is, there is no cost for the software that im running. Its a free script and as long as there is a link on the main page, its free to use. The only cost is the domain name and the webspace.

It broke up to $6.95/mo for the webspace and the domain im not worried about, its yearly and its paid for 5 :)

There is a paypal account setup. The domain shouldn't take more than 16 hours for the most part. As soon as thats up, i can log into the photo webpage and create user accounts. That might have to wait until tomorrow night.

Well guys... i checked it today, and USMB.net points here. Looks like photos.usmb.net is working as well. I was having trouble uploading a picture, i might need to re-install the script. I'll keep everyone updated.

So... has anyone else used this redirection from http://www.usmb.net? Comments? Suggestions? I will have photos.usmb.net up and running within the next 24 hours. I want to thank Brad for being the 1st to donate toward the cause, i'll have your account up and ready as soon as the gallery is stable.

I will be working on a form for requesting gallery login's as well. Need to get a stable running version of the gallery up 1st.

Yeah...Works real well. I like how you have the links at the top. Maybe smaller???

Oh yeah a small thing, I don't know the term, but the title that shows at the top of the window is "untitled"

Let us know when your ready for photos.

Yeah, the main page for USMB.net is just a frame. The lower frame has the URL for the message board so you will always get the USMB when you go there... the links at top can be made smaller, but i will most likely put together an image map with some fancy buttons. Just put text there until i get the pages sorted out.

As far as it being untitled, thanks for pointing it out :) Already noticed it and i should have it taken care of next time I update the USMB.net page.

Photo's should be ready soon. If you goto photos.usmb.net/gallery/ you can see the gallery is up, but the images are broken links. I was able to log in successfully, but it is having trouble putting images on the webserver so I think i have to change some of the permissions for the album's folder. I will dink around with that later.
