Here's an interesting idea I thought up while showering this morning. I would take a 97 SVX LSi (AWD i think?). Then I would transplant the driveline of a Manual transmission Subie, preferable an STi. Then I would take the engine, put a fully custom exhaust on it with dual tips, maybe coming out the same side like the new Pontiac GTO. I would add hotter cams, and a cold-air intake system, reprogram the ECU on a dyno, and do some body mods. Most likely I'd go for just pearlescent black with a tasteful but agressive rear spoiler, and some tasteful ground effects. Maybe a quicker steering rack, and then some nice gold BBS wheels with sticky rubber. Price not an issue, is this even doable, or is it totally unreasonable?

you can do almost any thing if price is not an issue, the cams will cost alot to do, you should just put some lower comprsion pistons in the EG33 from a the ej22t, and then put a turbo on it. This way you would alot more power than just cams, and a intake/ehust, but it would cost about the same.

I think the idea is great but the SVX is one of the nicest cars on the road so why mess with the motor and wiring and stuff just to lose half the coolness of the car.

 

Just put a manual trans in the SVX and buy a GTO with a big ol V8 in it. One for the highway, one for the dragstrip.

Ditto with Shawn. Esp a 97 as they are the rarest of the bunch. As for the exhaust why would you want to ruin a work of art. Its probably one of the best factory exhaust systems I ever saw. It would be a very tough feat to actually improve upon it.

 

My advice is if you haven't driven an SVX go take a couple for some drives. It is a very complete vehicle that works flawlessly as it is. Yeah the tranny can be problematic but if cared for it is an amazing GT. Very similar to the XJS or a Jensen Interceptor. Two cars aside from some XJS's were all autos as well.

Why not spend the cash on lightening the car a little? 230bhp (Euro model) is plenty for a NA 3.3...why stress it further and hurt reliability and drivability?

 

The car has a serious weight problem and money well spent could see it lose maybe 100kg, which would do wonders for off-the-line performance.

 

Thinner sound deadning panels (or complete omission), lighter seats (nothing electric), thinner carpets, lighter wheels, thinner glass, consider bonding the windows shut so you can remove the winding motor, carbon driveshafts, manual trans with a lightweight flywheel.

 

Some of these things are more exotic/expensive than others :D

 

This way the car becomes quicker and the engine and transmission will last longer since they don't have to haul as much excess fat around :burnout:

Yeah, good call. The hotter cam idea and hew exhaust was just an afterthought, but the stuff you mentioned would keep the character of the car and improve it.

well said. that has been entirely my experience with my MY94 LSi. had an opportunity to run with a Lotus Elan, Jaguar XJ8 and Honda S2000 on a tour this past September. I didn't have a full appreciation for what this car is capable of until that day.

The SVX H6 engine is one of the best engines on the planet. Super smooth.... and with a bulletproof short block (the heads are good too).

 

I would not under any circumstance swap if for a turbo H4.

 

As stated by others the SVX is some 3,600 lbs, much heavier than the WRX. You migh save 150 lbs by swapping the engines, but your power to weight ratio will not change all that much.

 

Get a WRX-STi instead if you want raw performance. Especially since performance parts such as suspension for the SVX can be hard to come by (hey, the car was discontinued 6 years ago and there are only 13,000 of them, so what do you expect?).

 

I have seen non-Turbo SVX's up to 250HP (20 HP gain) with fairly simple exhaust an intake modifications. And the performance is around 6 seconds flat from zero to 60, at best you might get an SVX down to 5.7 seconds unless you twin turbo the H6.....

 

A stock SVX is generally faster than a Maxima or Altima V6 which tend to spin their wheels and develop torque steer rather easily. On dry pavement the SVX is a good match for the Infinity G35, which is the car that I consider to be closest to the SVX in fit and function. Infinity will have an AWD G35 shortly!!

 

I have always wondered what a light pressure turbocharger would do for the SVX. 4 or 5 PSI (post intercooler) of boost might do wonders without too much added weight, reliability problems or turbo lag.

 

The problem is the twin but not twin exhaust system of the SVX (look under one and you will know what I mean).

As others have said, SVX is an absolutely amazing touring car that many people dont realize it is. I think you have to drive one to truly appreciate its amazing road manners. The engine is matched my none in smoothless, reliablity, and OHHH that exhaust note. "Wait, when did i start driving a Porsche?"

I know there is a company out there that performs manual transmission conversions on the svx. They said it felt like a different car. Much more fun to drive and felt lighter that it actually was. With the humongous power potential of the svx motor, it can be a killer combination. Since the eg33 is esentially an ej22 with two extra cyinders, forged pistons and rods are readily availible. Those coupled with some forced induction would produce massive horsepower (500 or better).:slobber:

 

An sti driveline is definately a go, and with that, you would have one killer sube. The only thing I would worry about is the gear ratios of the 6 speed not matching the engine. But I wouldn't know. Good luck.

I dont think you would even save 150 pounds switching to a ej20t, or a ej25t the turbo stuff weighs alot and both engines are all aluminum.

You should try to lighten the car up, you sabosabley save 150 pounds switching to the 5spd, you can save another 40 pounds by a carbon fiber hood, and another probley 100 by switching the seats out and putting in some nice after market ones in. You could probley save 300-400 pounds by lots of small stuff, and big stuff like the trannie.
