New toyfor the RX

sweet, what are you going to use for a heat exchanger and pump? Ive always thought it would be cool to use a reservoir for the water where you could put ice cubes into, giving you a super cooler. hell, maybe even a removeable reservoir you could stick in the freezer.

I already have an AWIC setup on my RX....I'm jsut upgrading the core unit its self with something that was more 'designed' for the car.

 

Currently I am using a no reservior system to save weight, and i dont see the need for an extra tank. The SCCA class I run in deems ICE as an illegal method of cooling down the water/air in the system.

 

I have a 4GPM pump on constant run, and an exchanger core that is approx. 20 " wide, 18" tall and 1/2" thick...aka the stock A/C condensor core mounted in the stock location.

 

Intake temps are within or AT ambiant temp during cruise, I've seen the temps go as high as 140*F...but NEVER beyond that. I have an IAT sensor, the open element kind, right after the current IC. All of that will change in the future when I install this one ofcourse.

EJ's are for those who dont know any better.

 

No..EJ's are for those who have blown up countless EA's. After i blew up 2 in 4 rallies, i had to think about something else...especially since i was running almost bone stock (7 psi, exhaust, and k&N)

 

To build a reliable EA you are seriously looking at 2-3 grand. You need rods, pistons, MLS gaskets, bigger turbo, I/C, and some serious Engine Management.

 

For me...all that crap puts me in open class. Why run an EA which might make 200 HP reliably...when i could drop in a STOCK Ej20 and make the same power and have almsot factory reliability??

 

Also take a look at the FACTORY SUBARU Rally prep info...here http://www.faberit.com.au/rxrally/Pics/RX_Docs/index.html

They did all these engine mods (pistons, rods, cams, ECU, Turbo, and Crank)...The make like a whopping 170 hp...And they were also notorious for blowing smoke and not making it through rallies without blowing up!

 

Nice. Alltrac I/C BTW...i've got 2 of those sitting in my garage!!

Both engines blow headgaskets....both engines require 'building' to take the power needed for racing...both engines require SERIOUS engine management for racing...both engines have the same reliability side by side, when you get them apples to apples (aka both engines equally new and equal power output per displacement).

 

As for smoking...I'm not smoking anything. I dont do drugs. I do EA82s.

Might be the case.. but if i can have a 115hp EA. or a 230 hp EJ20...and they last the same amount of time...i can have twice the amount of fun in the woods.

In my experience...that EJ20 has to be closed deck(or atleast an EJ207), originally an STi product with forged pistons at least, large radiator, good oil cooler and some good tuning for it to last as long or longer than the EA82.

 

I've seen EJ205's last as long, or less than my EA82 when put to my abuse.

 

There have been several EJ257's that have failed in vastly short amounts of time....they have weak pistons when put under real stress.

Whoa Whoa Whoa, I am all for building and tuning engines because of preference even when there is a better alternative. I chose the ER27 even though it was about the least practical engine for my BRAT. But to say that the EA82 compares to the EJ/EG series is like saying a DC3 is a viable compeditor to the 777. It was an OK engine, it developed allot of the technologies that went into the EJ series, credit where credit is due, but it is not an equall to the newer engines in power or reliability. At it's ragged edge it is barely touching the baseline of the newer engines in power and the newer ones have a tolerance for increased output that is an order of magnitude greater. The WRX engine is good for an honest 50Hp increase with just an ECU reflash and exhaust. And at that point you aren't making any meaningful impact on the longevity of the engine. The STI engine has been reliably putting down over 60% power increases on stock internals. The phase 2 EJ25 from the 1st gen Impreza has been turbo'd over and over with reliable multi hundred thousand mile reliability. A stock EA82 is clicking like a sewing machine and leaking like a pasta strainer when the newer gen engine is pulling hard and trouble free at 50% power increase and the same mileage.

 

 

Each subie engine is a great and unique step in subie history but we have to be honest about what each one is and isn't.

my thing here is..

 

 

I put 2-3 grand into an EA..i'll be making 200 or so HP...RELIABLY.

 

I put 2-3 Grand into an EJ...i am 1. getting ALOT more for my money, as things are available and i don't have to pay for the "customness". and 2. i'm going to have 1 hell of an engine, and dam near close to 300 HP reliably.

 

Then again...i'm also paying next to nothing for my engine swap.. Probably a fuel pump, and some other odds and ends (some injectors, with STi Ver 2 Manifold, and a stock WRX BOV).

Bah, to each his own.

 

After this mornings events, and events with other EJ cars in the past week, I forsee ZERO EJ's in my future besides the one currenty in my driveway that disabled itself this morning then fixed itself somehow. It's got one last chance to prove itself before I swap an EA82T into it.

I rock EA-81 :-p bow down to my timing chains, and massive gas mileage.

I respect anyone more that is a "do it yourselfer" the new ones In my opinion are no fun to soup up, there are just far to many of them around to be unique and different.

 

I was actually considering changing my hatchback's power plant to a volkswagen turbo motor I have, aircooled 340hp machine ;) but that would just be giving up on my cars soul! the EA-81. I think if you can make do with the orginal you've accomplished alot more.

ej motors own ea motors. ej22t shortblock with an all stock bottom end with some ej20g heads can take silly amounts of boost reliably. not to mention the difference in flow if the heads.

WJM, what class are you in for SCCA and how competitive is the RX? what kinds of vehicles are you running against?

well. i dunno about WJM..

 

but personally. i was running my 85 RX in P4 Performance Rallying. i was up against 2.5RS's, WRX's, Talons, etc. basically, engine management is free as long as it is "plug and play", this means that WRX guys are running anti-lag, and are tuned right out for the 32MM inlet restrictor, open exhaust, and 110 Octane Fuel. You add all that up, and a WRX is easily making 250 hp crank.

 

I was running 7-9 PSI with no intercooler (because of the class), on 110 Octane race fuel (to fend off detonation), and just open exhaust and K&N. And i still can't/couldn't keep the things together.

 

Overall though...i was competitive in the class, but i had to push the thing to within an inch of it's life (WOT ALL the time) for 20 kms at a time.

I used to run in Street Mod, which is any 4 seater car with any drivetrain configuration as long as the engine block is of the same maker. I was mostly up against WRX's STi's 2.5 RS, GSX's BMW M3 Lightweights honda civics...you name it. LOCALLY...I was very dominant. Regionally the car did ok...but was nowhere near fast enough to take it nationally.

 

Now I am running F-Street Prepared. You have to use stock engine and internals, forged pistons are allowed as long as they are EXACT same dimentions as stock. Intake and exhaust manifold and the rest of the exhaust is unrestricted, along with intercoolers as long as they are cooled by the atmosphere only, EMS is unrestricted, boost is now free, diffs are free, suspension is mostly open-n relocated mounting points or adjustable arms, but camber plates and coilovers and bushings/offset bushings are allowed. Lightweight seats, non-stock steering wheels are allowed. Water injection is free, and launch control. Antilag is still fuzzy, as are bypass valves. You can also roll/tire clearance the fenders to show MASSIVE rubber on the car.

 

I'll be up against the early 80's/late 70's VW rabbits and sciroccos for national and regional events. Those things weigh about 1700~1800 lbs. RX is sitting at 2490 right now. Hopefully, with the power, the diffs, suspesnion and tires, car for car I can make up for the weight...driver is 90% there.

 

Locally, I'll be up against honda civics, rabbits, and a whole assortment of other low powered FWD/RWD cars. Any other EJ subaru that is eligible for FSP will NOT be competitive at all(any of the N/A EJ's EXCEPT 2.5 RS). Locally I will dominate again for sure.

I don't think your telling him what he has is garbage, and switching in an entirely different motor is not constructive for what he is doing. He is trying to make the best of his orginal drive train RX, and doing a good job of it!

 

If he was really concerned other wise. He would construct a tube frame, use his RX for a shell. Add 4 link 12 bolt rear end, tub the rear for some huge mickey's. Throw in a banks twin turbo chevy BB 502 with 1500 HP with an extra 300 hp NOS boost and whoop you all.

 

If he actually wanted to swap his motor give him a hand then, but don't bust on his ride! That's just not cool.
