caguy
I plan on converting in May. I have a 2.2 that I pulled out at a wrecking yard. I just bought a 25 ft. sailboat and was wondering if the 2.2 will handle it. Does anyone here tow with their conversion? I am also currious about smog approval for the 3.3 in California. Is that a problem. Thanks, Frank
ShawnW
Hobart Kennedy of KEP is working on his personal vehicle having an eg33 SVX engine but hes not in a hurry to complete the conversion. If anybody will obtain CARB approval for that conversion it will probably be him as he knows what it takes to get thru it. I would stick with the ej22 conversion. Theres alot more help out there for it, it fits nicer, and gets better gas mileage. The engines themselves durability wise are about the same but the availability of parts for the SVX engine is a concern. I personally think the Vanagon stock is not a tow vehicle. The vehicle doesnt stop itself well enough let alone your Sailboat too. There are brake upgrade kits available but they really only take your less than optimal brakes and make the vanagon stop more like a typical car or truck from what I have read. South african brake kits as well as some from Smallcar.com for starters on things to google.
caguy
Thanks for getting back. I was more concerned about the pulling power of the 2.2. I have since spoken to a fellow in Canada who thinks that it should handle it fine. The brakability was also a concern of mine but I find that the brakes on the VW are as big ad the ones on my Mustang which are noted for their ability to stop. I think I will also consider putting electric assist brakes on the trailer too. I really don't want to give up my Westy, my wife and I enjoy it immensely. ballitch
trailer brakes are a MUST...doesnt matter what kind of brakes your car has, chances are it cant stop a boat too!
