ej20t(g) in an xt

I have an 85 xt turbo manual.

 

Lets say I also have an ej20g with ecu and everything but the gearbox.

 

I know this has been ansvered before but. Can I use the ea gearbox??

 

I've heard that if I'm going for the ea gearbox I would need a kit to make it fit. What I don't know is what I need to do to the flywheel and clutch.

 

Will the ea gearbox handle the extra power?

 

And last but not least. What does is take to make an ej gearbox fit. Is the front axles plug and play or do I need to have new axles made?

I'd use an EJ transmission... since the EA trannies seem to die with lotsa power (or a tcase)

you will have fun mounting the Top mount Intercooler in the XT engine bay, as the firewall is that much closer.

 

it's tight in mine even, and i have the spare tire well.

Use the EJ tranny...it's not that bad to get it worked out. Just need to do a tranny x-member, and shorten the main prop shaft.

Regarding the ej gearbox, is there any differense between the gearboxes on the ej20 and the ej20g? Maybe higher gearing on the ej20t?
The EJ20G is the EJ20T, the 'T' is erronious when talking about Subaru engines with the exception of the EA81T, the EA82T, and the EJ22T. JDM engine importers use a generic identification system and for most JDM engines, a 'T' denotes a turbocharged engine. The problem is that for Subarus, the EJ20 series engine has many different ID's for a turbo engine, EJ20G, EJ20K, EJ205, and EJ207, so if you buy from one of the imports, you'll need to know which year the engine is that you are getting. From 1989 to 1996 EJ20G, 97 to 98 EJ20K, 99 to?? EJ205, not sure when the EJ207 came in.

 

Ok, to answer your question, if you are going to use an EJ20G, you will need a tranny from an EJ20G or an EJ22T, both should take the power of the engine. A tranny from a N/A EJ20 may last awhile, but will fail quickly with all the power from the EJ20G.

What kind of modding would have to be done to the rear axles?

 

The xt front axles is a direct bolton to the ej tranny?

 

To the rear axles...ZERO...just swap in the new Differential.

 

Front axles are a direct slide on the tranny, and drive in the pin.

 

The main prop shaft, needs to be shortened around 60MM. and will generally cost you around 100 bucks.

I already got discs in the rear but maby I need bigger brakes?

 

I was thinking that maby I could use impreza brakes up front and 200sx calippers with e-brake in the rear

If you are getting the engine from a front clip, it should have all the front suspension there, so that part should be easy. I don't know if this will satisfy the requirement for something in writing, but at least you would have basically the same brake as the car the engine came out of.
