Can a 2.5 OB be converted to 2.2?

Recommended Posts

I have one of the trouble prone 2.5 , in a 97, 5 Speed. OB which is on it's second HG @ 150K miles. I just purchased an older, 91 legacy, with a strong 2.2 engine and a weak Auto Tranny. How difficult would it be to put the 2.2 in the 97 OB?

Will the flywheel from the 2.5 fit the 2.2? Could I use the OB ECU or would I have to change the wiring and ECU from the legacy to the OB?

Any assistance would be appreciated. I've owned subaru's for years, from the 1.6 to this 2.5 and this is the most troublesome engine of all. I normally average over 200k on a subaru engine with normal maintenance.

Thanks

My 93 legacy has 327,000 and is still going strong. After all that I have read here about 2.5"s forget it. When it comes time to replace my current legacy, HG replacement at 100k will not do. What years were 2.2's still around after 93 and in what models. thanks I may even look at other makes. For someone who has had subarus past the 300,000 mile point many times, this HG BS on 2.5's will not do.

If im not mistaken, you have the DOHC 2.5? If so then hmmmm..... If it is SOHC then u can throw in older legacy's motor and call it good. But if it's DOHC you'll have to put in older legacy's ecu also, you might......i mean might, have to change a couple of pin outs if it is an AT ecu into your 5 speed OB, and vice versa. or if some of the sensor pin out locations changed from model year differences. Someone back me up or call me F.O.S.

I bought a 97 OBW with auto and a bad 2.5 (broken timing belt). I am thinking about taking a 2.2 out of a 95 Legacy auto and dropping it in.

I bought it to sell, but if I can get a 2.2 and put it in the 97 easly enough I might drive it to death instead.

Somebody out there has had to have done this 2.5 to 2.2 swap before. Are we nuts or will it be fine?

The 2.2 was used as late as 2001 on the Impreza and as late as 99 in the Legacy L and Brighton.

Emily, can you tell me more about the EJ27 XT6 OHC 6 cylinder engine, and how well it would fit in a 92 Legacy that came with an EJ22 (n/a)? Are there any weaknesses in that engine that would make it a bad choice for an upgrade? I'm looking at years down the line when my EJ22 crosses the half mil mark, but I will be wanting something solid at that time as well. . .:D
