head flowin guys speak up

im flowin some ea82 heads. the most problematic area seems to be in the exhaust ports, right behind the valve seat, where the aluminum sticks out. the spot on the exhaust port where the two come together, on the sides, there are little bulges. and on the intake side, where the intake comes together with the heads.

these are the areas i worked on most, but have you guys noticed any other areas, that need work?

i have also opened up the coolant passage on the intake, and head, where the bottle neck is.

 

should i mess with valve overlap in the combustion chamber? anybody got any pics?

i poked mine out with a dremel and a "snake" extension.

 

i ground away that little nougat you speak of, and i blended in the area around the valve guides.

 

there are a few casting seams in there, i blended those in and smoothed them out. and i straightened out some of the curvature of the "walls" in the ports, so air had more of a straight shot.

 

i blended in the valbe guide ribs in the exhaust port, too, and blended in the webbing of the exhaust port, and opened it up a little.

 

i did this to heads with questionable cracks, but the car runs. it had real good low end response, but i cant get above 4500 when she is running good(whatever it is, its component problems, not the heads!)

when I did mine I just did minor deburing/polishing. I have been told by eng. builders to be verry carefull when removing material from heads. if you take out too much or the wrong spot you will actually lose performance. a good friend with a grand national found out the hard way. :banghead: so go real easy on em.

removing obvious things that stick in the way is fine. Any intake shape will be the ideal shape for a certain rpm, if you change it too drastically, it could make the ideal rpm far from where you wouldn't want it to be. You'd really have to take out a lot of metal I think though.

i could do that, if there is some interest. i have flowed harley heads, toyota v6 heads, lawn mower heads:headbang: , all that. these will be pretty mild, just looking for better mpg and free horsepower.

 

about the cracks, i peened them, hit them with a punch. to close them up, and keep them from being ignition points for pings. thought about hitting them with the tig, but didnt want the seats to fly out at me.
