MaroonDuneDoom Posted October 20, 2003 Share Posted October 20, 2003 i want to mount an extra electrical fan so i don't overheat so easily in 4 wheel. what would be the easiest/most trouble free plan. i'm thinking that i want one to run on a temperature sensor and the other one to be switched. how exactly would i wire the temp one and what all would i need to run one of them switched? That would make it a heck of a lot easier because then you could just put on another that is wired to a switch. Probably the ideal setup and what I may do in the future if I decide to ditch my belt-driven fan plus one thermatic fan setup is to wire it so that one fan comes on at like five or ten degrees above thermostatic temperature and the other comes on at like 30 degrees above thermostatic temperature. Also, there would be a separate manual switch for each fan. If you are starting from scratch, then you can probably get an adjustable temp sensor switch that just clamps around a radiator hose to control one fan. Just put a switch-controlled relay on the other fan. In stock form, the switch is on the ground side of the fan motor, so you should probably wire it that way. subynut Posted October 20, 2003 Share Posted October 20, 2003 I run my fans on seperite thermal switches. The attached file shows how I did it. Basicly I use a switched (key in on position) feed that goes to a thermal switch that turns on the relay that powers the fan. The fans get they're power directly from the batt. MaroonDuneDoom Posted October 20, 2003 Author Share Posted October 20, 2003 hey suby nut. i understand your wiring diagram, but where can i get the relays, and which ones do i need? also in your diagram, it shows two thermo switches in the radiator. is this stock? one more thing, is the thermo switch the little plug looking thing in the bottom of the radiator? i figure it probably is because it has wiring going to the fan. how EXACTLY could i do a setup like yours? i want the same options. it sounds pretty solid w/the fans turning on at the temperatures that you mentioned. thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

subynut Posted October 21, 2003 Share Posted October 21, 2003 OK, Relays I picked up at Radio Shack. 12V Single Pole Single Throw (SPST) rated at 30A. It's black with a little tab with a hole in it on the top to mount it. All the conections are on the bottom I used the thermal switch that's in the radiator to power the exsisting fan. Yes it's that little plug looking thing in the bottom of the radiator with two wires sticking out of it. I also added an adjustable one from AutoZone (PepBoys has them too) (Hayden is the manufactuer) to power the other fan. The one from AutoZone I took the sensor and put it in between the radiator fins by the radiator inlet hose. I set the adjustable to come on just after the thermostat opens (190). So, he runs most of the time. The second fan (the stock thermo sensor) turns on at 210 and goes off at about 190. Suby operates around 210 deg. The stock fan is fine the way it is, but I rewired it so I could turn it off when I charge puddles and take the load off the exsisting electrical system. hope this hleps! OH!
