Rust Free 84 Wagon Score But It Need Some Attention In The Trans Dept. Helppp????

Hey, I just picked up a 1984 subaru 4x4 wagon 4 speed " No air" and rust free... But and there is always a Butttt... It has some issues that maybe you guys could tell me what I need to do or check...

1st question. The Trans shifts smooth when the car is not in motion, BUT when the car is in motion I have to force it some what into first gear and I hear a grinding noise...What do you think it is and how to fix???

 

2nd question. When I ever so slightly press on the gas pedal and then release it quickly I hear a clonking noise from the front. Do you guys think its a motor mount or somethin??

Did you find this locally, I haven't seen an EA81 Wagon around here for a long time. And rust free!!! I guess it can't be local.

 

Are you going to take it to the PB meet this weekend to show it off?

Thanks.... Im afraid I wont make the meet...... I gotta work to pay for her now.... I hope I can get her fixed up right... So nice to be reunited with my first love... Well a Suabru of course... I had a 83 wagon just like her.. Even my first wagon had No rust and even AC... Made the mistake of selling her to a friend down on his luck and then he spray painted it black and then sold it to some rump roast wipe... I saw it once about two years ago and tried to talk to the owner and he had no interest in taling about Subaru's... He said"SO who cares if it was yours"....

1st answer. Sounds as if you need to adjust the clutch cable. from your discription, one would take it as the clutch is not fully releasing.

2nd answer. Does sound like bad motor mount. Easy way to check is to place jack under oil pan, with a block of wood between pan and jack. Raise jack up untill you contact pan, then try lifting engine slightly, repeat -slightly- don't force it up, while watching the mounts for un-wanted movement. Usually, you can spot a bad mount without using a jack, but it helps to find the weak ones.

Would also give the pitching stopper link a good looking over. About all I can think of right now.

Going into first while moving is going to be very hard - always is. You probably need new syncro's, and basically unless you can do them yourself, this means another tranny. It's not a big deal really - you have to realize that the syncro for first gear has to bring the gears up to a pretty high speed before they will mesh, and that's why your getting the grinding noise. I hear that redline gear oil will help quite a bit with smooth shifting.

 

Or just don't put it in first while moving - you shouldn't really have to anyway.

Good score, Joe! Does this mean you're not going to need all those Brat parts??? :lol: Sorry, I had to...

 

1st thing - Definitely a clutch adjustment problem like Tom said. TIP - Don't shift into first while your moving like GD said.

2nd think - Noise could be motor mount like Tom said, also check pitching stopper, basic soundness of front end, and axles.

 

3RD and most importantly - don't let ANYONE tell you there are no rust free 84 wagons in PA - you saw mine.....it's from PA all its life.

Chris what is a pitching stopper and how do I adjust it???? Or if chris doesnt see this can anyone else tell me what it is... Joe

 

 

Oh I had a trans shop tell me to drain the gear oil and then put in one quart of ATF and then fill the rest with 80w90 gear oil and this might solve the problem... what do you guys think?????????? I have not tried the clutch adjustment yet but my friend is gonna try it tuesday since he is off work... Joe
