Tach et al unwired

I'm trying to get my EA-81 84 GL Wagon in operating condition. It's running but someone has totally messed with the wiring. I've gotten most of the stuff back together but not everything.

Where is the FPCU in the '84 Wagon? What does it look like? The last owner of my 'Ru had a bypass wire running from the fuel pump through the back door, under the front seat and it was loose on the floor of the passenger side when I got the car. Hook the wire direct to the battery and car runs fine.

Also, tach isn't working. Am sure this is result of jerry-rigged wiring job as well. Where does the tach wire go to? And if I clean the grease off it, what color is the wire?

Also, where does the vacuum hose for A/C idle advance originate on an EA-81. I know where it is on the EA-82 but can't seem to locate origin point on the EA-81.

Hi Mac This is Jerry, on the tach wire is yellow and it is on the right front fender. The coil should be there on that fender. On the coil on the pluse side is 2 black wires and on the neg. side there should be 2 yellows wires. The fuel pump relay is located on the left insude front kick panle and it should be 1 of the bolts that hold the hood latch handle to the kick panle. The relay is blue or black box. Thanks Jerry

Lotsa good news ...

Following your directions I found the tach wire (yellow with white stripe) as well as another thin yellow wire loose. There already was one yellow wire on the coil. To make a long story short, I connected the loose tach wire to the coil and found the connection for the thin yellow wire. Now I have a working tach AND a working fuel pump sans jerry-rigged bypass!!!! Killed two birds with one stone! All gauges now working!

Thank YOU Jerry! U DA MAN!!!

Right.

The fuel pump controller is a blue box mounted against the driver's side wheel well, up under the instrument cluster.

This thing works by energizing the fuel pump relay when the ignition switch is in the "Start" position and also when the engine is running. "Engine running" is determined by the box seeing the same ignition pulses the tach sees. In fact, the fuel pump controller and the tach share the yellow wire from the coil.

The fuel pump controller shuts down the fuel pump when you switch the engine off, or when the engine stops because of an accident. On cars that have an ECU, the fuel pump controller is built into the ECU, but it works the same way.

Good job!
