spfi on a ea71? possible?

Recommended Posts

i've been reading up on the spfi swap for a ea81, and i was just thinking, would it be possible to do this swap on a gen 1? of course, the manifold would have to be shortened a tad, but i think a decent welder could tackle that. the intake ports are the same size i believe. i think that it would be awesome to have something like this on a gen 1, smooth starts and acceleration.

i was thinking of a spfi setup out of a loyale fwd 5sp, with ecu, alt, disty, etc.

I know you could do it.If you wanted to make it work I would probly just make an adapter plate for the spfi TB.Then just bolt it to the carbs adapter flange.I think that would be easier to do than cutting down the intake manifold off of the ea82.BTW I have a spfi TB off of a '89 wagon if you need one.Would be neat to see a spfi ea71!:)

You might have some difficulty with the fuel maps in the ECU being pretty far off. The EA81 is close to the EA82 in design and displacement, but the older EA71 is getting to be far enough different that it may need a custom mega-squirt ECU to run it properly.

Even an EA81 could benifit from this I think (I plan to try it), as the engine doesn't breathe quite as well as the EA82, and has lower compression besides.

As for the manifold fitment - I would make adaptors for each head to move the intake ports out far enough to bolt the stock EA82 manifold on. The manifold would be tough to weld as coolant runs through it, and the coolant port would need to be sealed up... not sure how you would do that except with a pretty fancy weld where you notch out one side to weld the interior, and then weld the hole up that you welded the coolant runner through.... messy to say the least, and you would need someone with some fantasic TIG skills.

Should be able to make some two peice adaptors from some AL plate pretty easily if you have a drill press ($39.99 from HF!)

Neat - not something I want or need myself, but if you could take pics of it, or allow me to drop by and take some for the site - that would be cool. I have several regular EA81 intakes to compare against photo wise....

I wonder if the ECU could be re-flashed with the fuel maps and programming used in the JDM engine..... and I wonder even more if that information could even be found from either a JDM ECU, or from Subaru of Japan....
