ScoobySchmitty Posted October 29, 2003 Share Posted October 29, 2003 Usually when I start my car up, I have my music blaring right away, like any good college student But, I recently had to really move to get to class, so I did not immediately hook up my CD Player, and noticed that my poor 91 Legacy is squealing and shrieking like mad! :boohoo: I know it's the belts, primarily when I am putting strain on the steering pump or compressor. Two things I can't figure out. #1, They are new belts, under 10k miles on them, so they really should not be doing this, and #2, If they are already out of adjustment (my error), how tight SHOULD they be??? frag Posted October 29, 2003 Share Posted October 29, 2003 Same thing happened to me after replacing the drive belt. I learned that you have to check them shortly after because the belt sets and elongates durint the first few thousands kilos. So everything is normal. Strakes Posted October 29, 2003 Share Posted October 29, 2003 The dealer removed and reinstalled the belts when changing the timing belt and the belts started squealing because they made a small mistake...they had tensioned the belts with the tensioning screw but had forgot to lock the "tension" in with the tension lock nut. Setright Posted October 30, 2003 Share Posted October 30, 2003 Well, you need to be careful with it, but brake fluid, DOT2, on a cloth and rubbed on the belts tends to stop the squeal. But this is a trick for old belts, not sure it increases the lifetime of the rubber, but it does soften the surface and let the belt regain grip Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
