1979 Auto trans help!

Recommended Posts

Ok, having no experience with automatics, but able to extrapulate on my manual trans experience, I have a stupid question!

1979 automatic.....(My salvage yard project).....To install the torque converter, do you just turn it about till it seats down and spins freely? There are 3 sets of splines, one for the oil pump. It just seemed too easy to replace on the shaft! It spins freely, so does that mean that all the shafts are lined up?

I took it off to replace the oil seal on the shaft.

I also noted that the bottom flywheel/driveplate cover bolts need to be longer than the manual flywheel cover bolts. Case is thicker on the automatic.

Any pointers on working with these trans? I'm hoping all is well with it. I'm getting Moosen's old auto with 57K on it soon, so if this ones is screwed I have his! (Thanks Paul!!!)

This is coming from general experience, and a little soob specific experience.

As you slide the converter onto the shaft it ususally 'clicks' twice as it settles into place.

When The converter isn't on all the way, it will have a tendancy to wobble from side to side

When the transmission is in place, if the converter isn't on properly, or all the way, it will bind up against the flex plate.

So if everything is in place and it still spins freely, its safe to guess that is in place properly

Let me know if you would like some help reinstalling .. Do you have my number?

Thanks all. I am quite unexperienced with the autos. (But learning!) I'm just so excited about having something different. I've ALWAYS had manuals!

It's spins well. I'm hoping it shifts just as well. I have a bad feeling though. It's an old transmission 130 K. Hopefully it will work well enough to get in and out of the driveway till I get Pauls 57 K trans.

Has any one, besides Paul, driven these early automatics? Thoughts?
