Guest Dom1127 Posted August 14, 2003 Share Posted August 14, 2003 Hi I have a 1984 older style Subaru Leone sedan. It is a GL-5 1800cc model. I would like to know if it is possible to use a Diff, Drive shaft and gearbox from a 4WD 1982/3 wagon and put it into my sedan. I noticed the fuel tank would be in the way of a diff so will a wagon fuel tank fit into a sedan? Also, I have seen some messages about EA71 motors etc... what does this mean? One more thing, is it possible to fit a turbo charger onto my current engine? What is the easiest way to do this with minimum modification. Anyone selling anything suitable? Guest jon61484 Posted August 14, 2003 Share Posted August 14, 2003 If your car is SPFI or MPFI then you can put an EA81 (EA81 are 1800s that have pushrods, EA82 are 1800s with OHC... EA71 is a 1600 engine) If it's carbed, then it would be *not-so-easy* to adapt a turbo to it. Everyone advises me against doing so, and I've never planned on it. Guest jon61484 Posted August 14, 2003 Share Posted August 14, 2003 EA81 came in carbed, spfi, mpfi, and turbo. Any of the EFI systems (SPFI, MPFI) can be adapted to use a turbo. But it's way harder to do so with a carb (so I've been told) EA82s came in the same fuel delivery types of systems. but EA81s are pushrod and EA82s are overhead cams, get it? Your leone should have the engine model name on the block close to the disty (distributor) It's going to be an EA81 though, because of the year. No EA82s came out in that year. If it's another EA81 from any other subaru, it'll drop right into your car. If it's an EA82, you're going to need (I think) an EA82 tranny, and halfshafts (axles) from an EA82 car. If it's 4wd then the driveline and rear diff of another leone of later EA82 of course. confused yet? If the engine from a newer leone series is NOT an EA81, you're going to need lots of parts from that same car in order to make it work. If it's an EJ series engine (90s style, where the EA82 and EA81 were starting to fade out) like an EJ22 or EJ20, then you're going to absolutely need the tranny, halfshafts (axles), maybe the driveline if it had one for 4wd/awd, and with that the rear diff. and rear axles. And heck, if it's an EJ series engine, you're most likely going to need to have custom axles built, as they are a certain length, and they won't fit in an EA81 or EA82 style of car... not to mention new engine mounts. Guest GeneralDisorder Posted August 14, 2003 Share Posted August 14, 2003 OK - you already have an EA81. You won't have any luck putting a turbo on that engine easily. The aircraft community does it, but they use different heads, cam, pistons, and completely different intake, and fuel delivery systems. Your best bet is to find an EA81T car (similar engine, but turbo from the factory - with MPFI), and swap everything dash-forward. They are VERY different cars. It is possible to adapt the SPFI from an EA82 engine to your engine - it requires the complete intake manifold, as well as the EA82 disty (with some modification), and has been done. Also - it is possible to put bigger and or newer engines in the car, but it takes a lot of work. Even to the extent of modifying the frame rails for the engine to fit (they are wider, since they have OHC's). There is two more things i would like to ask: -Will a wagon Drive line (4WD) fit into my '84 2WD leone sedan? There is room for a Drive shaft but no room for a diff with the current petrol tank. -What do most people do to fit a DIN size stereo into the 1984 dash?? I have seen a dash which puts the radio on a down-angle and looks quite good. Anyone have one of these (Grey) FS? Basically you will need to swap out all the rear components from the 4wd parts car into your car. (I'm assuming that your car is a 2wd). You will also need to swap in the tranny from the 4wd. There aren't too many mods when your working with the same years (80-84). Turboing your car can be done, it's just a matter of how much trouble you want to go through, and how much you want to spend on the matter. Hope this helps you, Catch ya Laters. Guest GeneralDisorder Posted August 15, 2003 Share Posted August 15, 2003 I am currently working on the exaxt same thing. My 84 2WD wagon -> 4WD swap is almost complete. There are a few other things you will need to do. Everything Adam said is correct, and those are the easy parts. You will also need the front struts from a 4WD, as they are different. In addition to all those parts, you will have to modify the tranny tunnel to accept the 4WD shifter, and also cut the shifter hole bigger because the 4WD tranny shifter comes up at a different angle, and is further forward. Also - the 2WD's have a one-peice console, and the 4WD has a two peice. You will need the two peice, AS WELL as the mounting hardware that is screwed into the dash above, and to the tranny tunnel below - they are different on the 2WD. The 4WD shifter mount doesn't exist AT ALL in the 2WD, so you have to drill out the welds from the one in a 4WD, and attach it to the tranny tunnel of the 2WD. I used sheet metal screws for this. It's not as big of a job as it sounds, but having a whole donor car is what I reccommend - otherwise you'll be making 10 trips to the junk yard - getting parts, and taking measurements. Although it sounds like he's working with a whole parts car, so all he has to do is cut and paste everything from one car to the other. Although one of the best ways to get around the whole haveing to put in the mounts for the 4wd shifter is to go to a 5spd. Then all you have to do is cut out the shifter hole to accomodate the difference of the shifter. Although the lack of haveing to make a shifter mount is offset by haveing to make a mount for the venter carrier bearing.
