Anyone built a Doran?

it's based off of a Subaru EA81 engine and tranny. Just wondering if anyone has tried to do it. I am sure that it's a pretty good candidate for an EJ swap as well.

Depending on when I finish the BRAT EJ swap/build up, I am considering doing this as my next project since I will have a spare EA81 lying around.

Also an ideal solution when you just cant find that 4th rare wheel for a complete set :brow:

Nice......

Anyways I have to schlep 40 miles each way to work and since I am not carpooling, I have to look with envy at all of those people flying past me. Don't want a motorcycle b/c there are too many stupid people here in LA and Subaru doesn't make a hybrid.

Per CA DMV if a three wheeled vehicle weighs under 1500lbs, its a motorcycle. Which means no smog. So I can build up the EA81 to high comp/weber/stroker or go turbo spfi. hehehe... that would be excellent. I think the key is make a cabin that is safe.

ROFLOL!!!   your KILLING me :dead: :-p Seriously tho ... there is something to be said for safety, but if your comming from the perspective of Doran VS Motorcycle, it's gonna be Doran hands down from what I have seen so far. I have to say tho, the leaning 3 wheeler (Slalom) is just a sweet idea ... not a pretty looking car, but that GM and Mercedes look pretty sharp!

leaning car is definately cool. but I am a caveman in terms of engineering and I have no idea how to make a leaning car work.

Anyways just thought I would put it out there. If my wife approves the project and I don't have a baby, when I finish my BRAT I will buy the plans and take a look at how it's build. I think the key to a car/vehicle like this is accident avoidance. It's like people who drive MGs or 914s or the original mini coopers. Look for pockets in the traffic flow inbetween the packs of car and get a flashing headlight for day time driving so people will see ya coming That and an open exhaust. VROOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Kinda like harleys.

What would be really interesting is if you could use a 4wd tranny and make it a 3wd.

Ivee thought of a hi mileage car for years, myself I would start with a light diesel say a lawn tractor engine or a motorbike motor, light tall narrow tires and rims ,even thought of using a import pickup cab for a base to start with , since everything is layed out for you and its some what of a safer box then a fiberglass shell , couple keys is keep the weight down and rolling/rotating mass (wheels/tires) down, keep us posted on the progress SJR:brow:

HMM... so i could get a beater ea82/ea81, hack the car in half and then make a rear frame w/a single rear wheel. IIRC EA81's are pretty light. I could hack away some of the body and replace it w/a tube frame. Maybe take the doors off when I take it in for inspection. I guess the key is to make the car look decent and not like this frankentrike.

If I so make it out of the foam material, I would like to replicate an impreza front end cause the look awesome.

yes

you would be way ahead if you use the doner cars windshield, steering set up, foot pedals, seat , doors with working seals and windows ,, if you have to fab this all up your self its alot of engineering , so go for it grad a junker and hack it up just keep the bare esentuals , reduce weight :brow:

I saw a 3 wheeled vehicle here local with a vw boxer, not electric. I also had a sube driveshaft delivered to my place by a guy who had a v8 on one! He was going to use the old subaru for something strange, I ended up with a good driveshaft from his changed project. four wheels rule wuth proper suspension in the same weight range, unless really just being unique for reasons my imagination could never be satisfied with. I had a 110 honda 3 wheeler 20 years ago when I was a kid... I am stiull aching from the bizarre handling characteristics that sent me and the trike flying in angles I never want to do again...:)

  • 4 weeks later...

**bump**

I've been thinking about buying one of the shorter-wheelbase sand rail rolling chassis kits and putting in a Subaru transaxle in the rear with this 22hpJohn Deere Diesel I've got out at the farm, so I'd end up with midengine rwd. Maybe building a body out of 3/16" birch plywood, and using the rear window from like an old MX-3 for a windshield. It'd work, I think, but is it more hassle than its worth?

5,000 dollars when all is said and done just to get like 90 mpg on biodiesel?
