Flowmastered87GL Posted November 10, 2003 Share Posted November 10, 2003 Generally you loosen the outside bolt on the alternator first, then the one on which it pivots. You can stick a 14MM open end wrench on the BACK of the pivot bolt and use it to tighten up the belt tension. Then tighten up the 12mm bolt that slides up and down on the outer alternator mount. Posted November 11, 2003 Share Posted November 11, 2003 I have found that if you tighten the pivot bolt first, (that has a nut on the other end of it), you are less likely to strip out the threads in the aluminum of the alternator housing. Most people that tighten the adjusting nut first tend to wrench the crap out of it, and strip it. I've had to drill out whot was left of the threads and put a nut on the backside of the bolt many a times on my rigs cause of this. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
