EA82T Gearbox Identification

Hi guys, me again

Can anyone identify this gear box?

It came bolted to a later model Jap import engine, which had the spider manifold and a turbo shroud, so I guess it was from a Vortex.

It has 4 electrical connectors, of which I assume 1 is 'reverse' but not sure what the others do.

In addition how do I tell what ratio it is without pulling it apart?

Thanks

I'd say either 5spd full time, or 5spd push button. It's not a dual range either way, doesn't have the rod running up the right-top side of the tranny. If you put it in gear does the rear output turn when you turn the input? Catch ya Laters.

The right side and left side photos are the same:lol:

I can't see the lever on the right side. If it's up high (transfer case)it's the pushbutton, if it's down low (diff lock) it's the constant box.

Its got the vacuum thingy for the push button 4wd switching... the bigg brass thing on the side with the vac hose nipples.. dont think th FT trannys had that.....

Actually you would be suprised to know they are the exact same (vacuum) unit with the same cable that runs to nearly the same location (they use the same vacuum unit under the hood too, drivers side firewall). It just depends on whether it goes to the transfer or differential. The transfer lever has the pivot on top and the diff lever pivots on the bottom and the cable is in almost the same location with either trans.

I fiddled around and got the pic of the other side up. The lever is down and forward some, not near the xfer case. So it's a full time with diff lock, single range though. Catch ya Laters.

Where'd ya find a pic of the other side? From the top view it doesn't look like a selective but it's hard to tell, dam wires are in the way...

Guest OH Noah

Sure looks like a single-range Full-Time 4wd 5spd to me.

Since it's from a Turbo car, it almost certainly has a 3.700:1 differential.

I don't think I've ever heard of an EA82T using anything but that ratio.

It looks IDENTICLE to my XT6 FT4WD trans...5spd of course. That came with an EA82T w/spyder intake on it? WOW. RARE stuff there.

Thank you SO much guys. This is EXACTLY the gearbox I've been wanting. Out comes th DR 5 speed!!

:D

Any clues on the ratio othe than a guess at 3.7? I really don't want to put it in then find it is different. I could turn the input shaft and see what the rotation on the axle is, but I was hoping to be more accurate.....

Anyway big THANKS again

PS: Fixed up the link to other picture.

It'll be 3.70 ratio. So if you have a D/r in there now you'll have to change out the rear diff, cause the stock one is 3.90 It's a pretty common diff though. Shouldn't be too hard to find one (if'n you don't have one already). Catch ya Laters.

Adam...wait a second.

The RXs are 3.70. I've got one. If this is the same trans as the XT6 has, then its 3.90.

BUT...if this is a special trans...then its going to be 3.70. I am voting that its the same trans as found in the XT6 5spd FT4WD, so its 3.90.

All turbo EA82T manuals are 3.70. Everything else is 3.90, unless you are talking about autos. I have not a clue on auto rear diffs tho.

I wonder about the serial numbers that are on the trans...maybe we can all compare numbers?

No prob Caleb, The only reason I knew this is cause I have one of each, side by side on the floor:p

Yep, could be 3.7 or 3.9, maybe you can tell by the part number?

 • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the info.

Still haven't figured out if it's 3.9 or 3.7

Any idea what the electrical connectors are for?

There are 4

1. Reverse

2. Diff lock??

3. ???

4. ???

One of the connectors is for the 2wd fuse, and I think the other one is for the light that shows it's in FWD when the fuse is in there. Here's a way to tell the diff ration. If'n I remember right, then 4th gear should be a 1:1 ratio. So if you put the tranny in 4th you could count the number of output turns to input turns there are. Catch ya Laters.
