Exhaust Question

Well after a huge scandal and a year or so of no emissions testing, CT is going back to a state-run emissions standard...So....the 2" side exit pipe on my wagon is going to have to be replaced. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> :(

 

Here's what I would like to do, and I'm wondering if someone who knows about exhaust principles would chime in.

 

My car is very loud right now.: Slightly larger collectors (they were rotated and replaced at a muffler shop when the exhaust studs couldn't be repaired), otherwise stock Y-pipe, first cat (in Y-Pipe), second cat (in mid-pipe), and then from there it takes a 90 degree turn at 2" to the frame rail, follows the rail to just before the rear driver's side wheel at 2" and ends with a slant-tip right there. No mufflers or anything. VERY LOUD.

 

I want to tone it down a little without losing too much of what I've already got ( a bit more power than stock ). I'm thinking of using two inline glasspacks - one 12" somewhere in the mid-pipe if it will fit without problems next to the driveshaft, and another one, maybe 18" in the stock muffler location. Also considering a SuperTrapp in the rear for tuneability.

 

Are these things going to quiet it down at all? Make it louder? Should I just go with one? If so, where - in the middle or in the rear?

if your car is turbo, then having two glasspacks would be way too much backpressure... but also, I wouldn't reccomend two glasspacks in a row. A cherry bomb glasspack after the second cat would work... it's a glass packed muffler, so it should be legal to do so. methinks.

I AGREE cherry bomb or a thrush glasspack. the thrush is a tad bit louder and they are 20bucks. get a 2inch inlet and outlet and 22inches long. sounds throaty. and punch that second cat.:D

as long as the pipe ends past the passenger area it wont be loud in the car.

on mine i got an spfi y pipe, just after that a cherry bomb, and then 2 inch pipe the rest of the way back.

pipe diameter for scavenging is only important before the muffler.

 

mine is fairly quiet, the y pipe does the scavenging, the 'bomb mellows it out, and the 2 inch pope lowers the tone. works very well on mine.

 

mount the 'bomb closest to the motor and straight pipe it!

Oobnuker's is an SPFI...at the moment;) CT Emissions will surely be a pain in the balls this time around.If it's anything like NJ they'll be lifting hoods and looking underneath right off the bat.Any computer/EGR,etc lights on and you fail.

 

It wasn't so bad before.You could load up on octane boost and dry gas and pass.I once even used that stuff called "Guaranteed To Pass Emmisions" stuff in a can.:eek: ...and it worked!...well I had it loaded up with drygas,etc..It was my '86 carb'd EA82 sedan.

 

I wonder if a twenty dollar bill will work as well anymore.:rollin: Those were the days.Not that I needed to do that.|I
