Sway bar removal Q's

Recommended Posts

Any one driving ther EA82 wagon with no sway bar up front?

I'm thinking of pulling mine off to:

1) allow more suspention travel off road

2) take away some of the front end push(under steer) on gravel roads

But I don't want it to kill my on-road handeling.

Any input, thoughts?:eh:

I havn't had my front swaybar on for about 5 months, its fine day to day and i havn't noticed any real adverse effects on handleing. you have to take off the exhaust manifold if you don't cut the bar, just a thought, had some problems with that in reiters pit. i wouldn't put it back on though much nicer with it off.

I've got mine off, and have noticed the reduced understeer on my favourite sliding corner. Also, when I had my rear wheel off the ground, the front wouldn't use it's last inch of travel. I now have that whole inch  and the car doesn't buck and lurch on bumps as much. I'm not sure if I really gained much traction.

I have mine off the Brat. It is noticable on road as well as off road. The benefit to not having it is that the front suspension will work independantly. With the sway bar connected the front will fight itself to keep the front wheels even.

What about buying or making a swaybar disconnect so you can have it for on-road driving and disconnect if for off-roading?

I've seen them advertised in Offroad Magazine and I was thinking about making one when I have time. All it really requires is cutting the swaybar in the middle and putting a pipe around it with removable pins going through the bar.

Any suggestions or ideas?

I had mine just disconected and boy did that cause a problem once i got stuck, one end go stuck under a root and backing up the other end dug into the ground, you might be able to just take off one side but i'd reccomend all or nothing as you may have problems if its half on.

Guys who've pulled the sway bar... you said the car has more body roll.. How fast did you guys run your cars after doing it? I like the idea of having the front work more indepently.. I do lots of loggin road rallying and I hate the bounce the bar makes

Well, I disconected 1 side and drove it arond all day. WOW:eek: It is sooooo much better in all aspects. Less under steer on gravell, smoother ride, tracks better over big bumps/pot-holes, and on my car if I'm puling off a side street into trafic and I let the boost get over 5psi in 1st I get wheel hop soooo bad it feels like it's gona rip somthing out of the front end. Now that the bar is un-hooked I can let it get up to about 8psi befor I have to back out of it:D

So then can I leave the stabilzer Bar wheres its at and just disconnect it? or is it going to get in the way?

Results sound great.. I hate that GODDAMN Wheel Hop when you turn on to side streets.... :banghead:

No one answered my questions about Highway speed.. Thats the only thing that might keep me from disconnecting it. my car is a daily driver and I make hte occasional 400 mile trip to Valdez to go snowboarding some I'm wondering what effects its going to have on body roll at 70 mph or so.... :drunk:

Yaknow, that's the odd thing, I have not felt ANY diferance @ 50MPH or more:eh:

That was one of my conserns too, I make trips to the coast(long twisty HWY) 8 or9 times a year in this car and I didn't want to kill the on-road handeling. I was thinking of just making disconects for it(I had a set on my B II) but with the way it drives I don't think I will bother;)
