Clutch judder??

clutch judder (also called clutch chatter or clutch studder) is when the clutch does not engage smoothly, rather slipping and grabbing, usually resulting in the car bucking, usually most pronounced in lower gears.

which way are you leaning with replacing the clutch? i am not too sure which to choose - a subaru replacement or aftermarket. i'm not looking to spend $450 for a high-performance clutch from the likes of act or similar. i'm just a regular driver, and am looking for just a good quality smooth clutch. have you given it any though?

New OEM in mine fitted last week is excellent, totally different than the clunker they pulled out. It has new part no dealer told me.

There's a thread "What's the verdict on the new Subaru clutches" with about 45 entries that I started. I'd read through the testimonials. At one point someone had the service bulletin posted. If your car has under 36,000 miles go get it replaced under warranty. If it's over and you haven' t logged complaints, you probably won't get too far.

Just got mine replaced this week and it is AWESOME. Couldn't beat the smile off my face. If you go stock, make sure to get the same parts on the 2003 model year. Test drive a 2003 forester or OB.

i've been reading the thread on the what's the verdict. it basically only talks about either people getting a free clutch from subaru or people all for act and other pricey clutches. i was wondering if there are any other good performing moderately priced clutches out there...

i've got a 97 leg which has some judder, but is way out of warranty & it isn't dealer maintained, so they aren't likely to cut me a break...

I bought mine from a used car lot (A mazda dealer in fact) and a Sube dealer had no trouble replacing clutch 6 mths out of the 3yr warranty. Flywheel machine etc etc. This clutch I can idle out of my garage up a slight incline in reverse from a cold start. That would be impossible with the clutch they removed. Still it appears Sube America is a very different animal than Sube Australia. Hey you have a TSB to wave in their faces, here we don't. Give 'em heaps.

TOS;

Thanks...no problems yet, but I have a '99 Impreza that is probably gonna have the engine replaced,and when that is done, Ill have the clutch replaced also.. car has 150K miles on it so I figure its about time.

At this point, if I have the OEM bits and pieces ordered, will I get the current, sound clutch? Or do I have to specify something?

I dont have any problems with my current clutch.. just anticipating a wear and tear replacement.

Thanks.

Don

Replace engine in 99 model with 150,000 miles??? What happened? And yes new clutch is a no brainer with engine out.
