A hello and my new 79 Wagon

Recommended Posts

Just want to say hello to everybody here! I just bought a 1979 DL 4spd Wagon, and have been lurking here for awhile while I plan my rebuild. I already own a 2002 WRX, bought new in 2001. I actually went on one of the Pine Barrens NJ runs back in 02 or so with the WRX. I'll be posting here a bit in the coming months, looking for parts and info.

The DL

I like both. I love the new-gen Soobies, but most of their owners are douchebags who roll around at 10mph listening to ther six 25" speakers in the trunk.

You actually use yours properly Tensen, and for that, I give you props

Hey, what muffler does your 79 have on it? The exhaust is exiting on the wrong side :)

Ya, my wrx is kind of a beater...its pretty thrashed. Its seen a LOT of dirt, mud, gravel, water, etc...and its a tank.

I thought the exhaust was stock, but i really have no idea. I havent been under the car yet. I have major plans for the car, so whats in it now isnt a huge concern, i'm gonna drive it for a bit as is while i assemble the goodies for it, then rip the car down to a shell, get the shell done, and then put it together with as much updated stuff as i can (interior, suspension/brakes, motor, etc), I'm looking to make it a fast street car, not a mudder.

should be an interesting (and somewhat longterm) project.

BTW, i know that a EJ22 will fit with some modifications, anyone know about the ej22t?

Cooooooool !!

And,I'm pretty sure I met you on that PB run.

Wasn't that 2001,right after Sept. 11th? I remember the smoke/dust still pouring into the sky from the WTC and the HUGE Amreican flag hanging on the GWB that weekend....and you WRX guys tearing it up!!!! I was RIGHT on your tails with my white '86 Brat.;)

Any OHC Subaru engine is going to be difficult to get into a Gen1, even an EA82. The frame rails are too narrow. You'll have to at least do some hammering/cutting.

Personally, I say leave it like it is. I like leaving old-school stuff as old-school. Mine is simply a restoration project.

yeah, seems like everybody's mentality is that "bigger is better"

why not keep the classic original and let the 1.6 do what it was made to do. run like a clock, keep you out of tickets ( ) get good milage, not break timing belts cause it has none, and plus they sound really cool.

Yeah, when I said "cooool" I meant because you scored the car.Not so excited about a 2.2 in there,or anything other than the good old 1600.

Well, whatever you do,have fun with it.If you stuff that 2.2 in please show us some pics and add some installation info.

heh, well since thats how everyone seems to feel, i'm gonna have to go and do a twin sti engine setup! :-p

seriously, its gonna stay as is for about a year, but my ultimate plan is to modernize everything, from interior to driveline. it could be quite a monster when its done, but ultimately budget is going to decide how far i'm gonna go with it.

Is the ea71 that much lighter than an ea81?

Putting the ej22 in my Brat didn't change at all how it sits like a heavier motor should. I've done some "bigger motor" swaps in other make where the car will drop a noticable distance up front.
