Suggestions for inexpensive Legacy wagon

Hi.

 

I would like to get an inexpensive (read "high-mile") Legacy wagon as a commuter car and occasional desert camping car.

 

So far it seems most logical to get a Brighton wagon with manual transmission since I don't want to spend more than $4,000.

 

What should I look out for? Are Legacies fairly reliable if maintained, even after 150,000 miles? Are the 2.2 liter motors really sluggish with a slushbox?

 

I would appreciate input from those with experience with high-mile Legacy wagons.

I have a 97 Legacy L with 2.2 and 4eat. It is a sedan, not wagon though.

I have about 160,000 miles on it and the only thing I have done other than maintenance item (timing belt, plugs, wires) is the oil pump. I abuse it and drive it hard and it runs great.

 

It is not fast like a sportscar, but the AT will rev to redline when you push it hard. I've driven a GT sedan identical other than the 2.5 instead of 2.2 and didn't notice that much of a difference.

 

I have done some mild off-road driving through 12-18" of water and across hills of soft New Jersey sand.

My parents have a '94 Legacy wagon with an automatic. I have personally flogged the snot out of that car for thousands of miles, and it has never skipped a beat. Yes, the automatic will shift deep into redline if you want it to, which is great. I like that engine so much, I'm putting one in the back of a '74 VW Beetle.

The real solid body of the Legacy is his 'trump card' in my opinion. This makes that it's always a safe thing even if there are some expencive repairs to do.

Just speaking from my families personal experience. We currently own 5 Legacies that each have at least 145k miles on them. These cars are rock solid! I can't say enough good things about them. Like mentioned before, the auto will shift deep into the redline(its fun to hear that boxer growl!). Rust is generally not a problem for these cars so they hold up really well. $4000 should get you a sweet Legacy. Good luck on your search!

92 Legacy wagon = 125,000 miles and a 96 legacy wagon = 157,000 miles. Both run great, but neither are as fun to drive as my 83 brat = 126,000 miles. Change the oil, do the timing belts according to schedule and drive them to death.

2 words... reconstructed title. I have (for example) a 98 Impreza that was rear ended... runs great. Personally I kinda like it that way because I know the reason it went up for sale was the crash, NOT because of mechanical problems.

If you really want inexpensive, it really is a cheap way to go if you plan to run the car into the ground and never resell it.
