Overheating rx

Recommended Posts

When ever i drive my rx i always let it sit for a good 5 minutes to warm up. Obviously in that time its not completely warmed up but i try. Lately i notice that as it starts to warm up (from looking at the thermo on the dash) when im driving it gets pretty hot and today it got really close to the red zone. So i did what every text book will tell you to do. Pull over and crank the heat. So im curious to why the hell its not cooling. Im thinking it could be a ****ty stat so im gonna start by replacing that tomorrow. Any other ideas or people who have had this problem??

Mike

P.S. when i pulled over my engine was making a loud ticking noise. im scared. i dont want to get a new engine.

When you first start your car do you hear any like gurgleing sounds from the passenger side under the dash? if so then you have an air pocket in your coolant.

Test your Thermostat in a pot of boiling water and makesure its working.

When it gets hot have you felt either of the radiator hoses? or put your hand on the radiator itself? are they also hot or are they cold, could mean that your radiator is plugged from rust or debris.

Subaru Engines Tend to Tick when they get hot, shouldent hurt anything.

This should give you somewhere to start

Thanks matt, i know the radiator hoses are fine, im almost positve the radiator is fine, but i will still take a look at it. Gurgiling, i hear it when i shut the car off but my i always just thougt it was the resivior filling up. If that is air in the system how do i go abouts ridding the air. Ive seen kits for filling coolant where its like a radiator cap with a funnel on it and once u fill the radiator u run the car to op. temp. to burp it. will this work?

Im not sure if those kits work or not, ive never tried one, but here is how i learned to to it, park your car on an up hill incline and take off your radiator cap, and with the car running, let it get up to running temp, and slowly (VERY SLOWLY) add more water/coolant (your choice) untill its totally full and you cant possibly add anymore, give the radiator hose a squeeze and watch for air this should get all the air out of the system.

I was having the same problem, I replaced stat then put a set of elec. fans on to ensure no over heating. I just also put in a coolant recovery kit (type of coolant resv.) because at normal opperating temp i would loose fluid.but yes when temp gets warmer it dose seem to tik a little:boohoo:

this topic has been brought up many many times.

Please try using the "search" feature

You will see if you take the time to do so

this problem is the result of a bad radiator -

the problem will not be fixed by flushing.

So many guys have tried this and wasted their time and money on fast fix "flushes".

Most of the problem lies in delaminated cooling fins on the outside, no flush will fix this.

There will be references to places and prices for a rad. This is a very common topic.

Hope this helps - as a Suby engine is a terrible thing to wasterad1.JPG
