adwolf1 Posted November 29, 2003 Share Posted November 29, 2003 the paint on my 96 legacy L sedan is peeling off, almost in sheets. the bumper is undamaged, it just looks funny with big spots of paint missing. i've heard people say that it is very difficult to match the paint color on the plastic bumper to the rest of the car. Something about reformulated paint not sticking to plastic well.. Is this true? Is there a special type of paint that needs to be used? The front bumper does look kinda funny, so I'd also be interested in a way to make it look better. I've thought of getting one of those black nose guards (bra, whatever) but I'm cheap. Gotta fix a few other things first. (and buy a left-handed acoustic guitar. I've wanted one for 23 years... frag Posted November 30, 2003 Share Posted November 30, 2003 Same problem here and the fact that I always have to park at the curb side in tight spots grealty lowers the probability that a new paint jop would last very long. So I'm looking for something like a black rubber coating that could be sprayed on both bumpers (a more elegant version of Gravel Gard) and that could be touched up easily. DerFahrer Posted November 30, 2003 Share Posted November 30, 2003 I screwed up my bumper in February , and last summer, I bought a replacement and had it painted on the side for $75 where I work. Needless to say, being done on the side, it was done half-assedly (is that a word? :brolleye: ) Anyway, I too have some chunks of paint missing on the bumper, and I plan on getting it repainted soon... The problem is, the bumper wasn't sealed right. If it is sealed right (they use some special chemical that allows the paint to bond to bendable surfaces like plastic) then it won't chip. And they can do a pretty good job of matching paint from not only the color code, but they might do a slight bit of mixing to match the slightly faded paint the rest of your car might have... Phillip Posted November 30, 2003 Share Posted November 30, 2003 Painting plastic panels is not something that can be easily done at home. Your bumper facia will likely need to be stripped of all finish, chemically cleaned, primed, and repainted. The paint requires a flex additive so it won't crack, and the paint/clearcoat will need to have an epoxy based hardner added to the paint mixture. If inhaled, the fumes from the epoxy paints & primers can be fatal; you'll need a fresh-air breathing appratus to spray it. Some jobs require a professional; this is definately one! nathan Posted December 2, 2003 Share Posted December 2, 2003 we had a legacy that did the same thing(turns out that the bumper was already repainted from an accident we didn't know about). Anyhow, I know body guys and they said that the subaru bumper paint problem usually isn't an issue unless it has been repainted, but just about no one in the auto body industry will guarantee a repaint on a subaru bumper because of something like the type of plastic/rubber that subaru uses is almost impossible to make a perfect paint bond. Hearing all of this we said forget it and bought a $60 bra from jc whitney which fit perfect and took care of the problem. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
theotherskip Posted December 2, 2003 Share Posted December 2, 2003 i got in a fender bender a few months back... it only rubbed the corner of my front bumper, not damaging it, but rubbed away all the paint. turns out it had been touched up once before, and all of that paint layer is now peeling. estimates for repair of the existing bumper (stripping, prep & painting to match) were between $425-450, with the car in the shop for about 3 days... they would guarantee the paint would not peel (damage not included)...
