I am ready for a manual. Legacy?

Recommended Posts

I've driven V8, RWD, automatic, large, domestic sedans or wagons. I liked them and still do.

Now for my daily driver, I want something different. I am ready to walk into new territory. I want another wagon, but more economical, manual and with a tach. I want to get more than 18 mpg. Domestic makers don't realy make wagons anymore, aside from Ford Taurus but I don't want it because the engine is transversely mounted and it is FWD and I hear there are too many problems with the tranny.

I am thinking about a used Legacy, say from early 90's.

Does it come with a normally-mounted engine like my Loyale or is it side-ways? How difficult is it to service? (spark plugs, basic repairs in the engine bay) What kind of mileage does it get with an auto and with a manual? Is the manual tranny worth it? What about that 2.2L engine and its longevity?

My 97 Legacy Sedan w/2.2 is the best Sub I have ever owned. I have 160,000 HARD miles on it and have only replaced the oil pump (yeah... belt, wire, plugs).

I wish I had the MT, but the 4AT has held up well despite my abuse/driving style.

I have a '90 Legacy with over 130,000 miles and have had no engine problems whatsoever. The 2.2 engine is one of the best engines out there. I've replaced the water pump, belts, plugs etc.

The engine is normally-mounted and the engine is quite easy to access and service.

Im getting 23.5 mpg on mixed driving but if you drive within the speed limit that should go up. The weakest part of the car is the auto tranny, I had to get it replaced at around 100,000 miles.

hope this helps.

172,000+ miles.

No major problems, just routine maintenance, and like mentioned the auto tranny is about the weakest link in the chain. Get a 5-spd if you can.

My wife's 1993 Legacy has 144,000+ miles. The 2.2 liter engine is bulletproof...never had a problem with it. However, we had to overhaul the automatic transmission at about 118,000 miles. I recommend you get a 5-speed, manual tranny.
