Very Strange and slightly disturbing thing from "tranny land"

Recommended Posts

Well - it was a "free gift with purchase" of my redline geer oil.....

That is to say it was stuck to the drain plug magnet.....

I'm still driving..... probably wouldn't have bought the redline if I wasn't ($40 - ouch!), so what could this be? Any ideas guys? Looks like a very specific key for something....

Wow. That is slightly disturbing.

I just looked in my parts book, and it appears to be

part# 32613 AA010 or 44190 7020"shifting insert"

I don't know much about trannies, but it looks like this thing is one of three that fit into slots in a synchro "hub" and catch on a synchro "sleeve". In any case, it is obviously not supposed to be floating around inside your tranny.

Hhhhmmmm - does it look like the other two will hold the tranny together?

Should I run to the nearest fallout shelter?

If it does 'splode on me - I just hope none of those little guys come flying into the cabin - could be very dangerous at high speed I should think.

What is the going odds on me putting this back in? HAHAHAHA

I had one of those fall out of my ea71 4wd trans. I discovered this when I drained the oil before dropping the trans. The reason I dropped it, was to replace it, because it would only shift into 4th gear unless I made a sharp left turn. After looking at some diagrams, it's pretty obvious that one of the functions of the insert is to keep the different parts of the syncro in alignment.

You dont have to worry about parts flying into your cab area..

i broke a viscous coupler in my RS.. it sent parts colliding.. when i was doing about 60 mph.. it shot the 5th gear out of the case and into the bottom of the car.. put a big dent in the bottom (about the size of a softball) and it sounded like a bomb went off...

but thats about it.
