Clutch or transmission?

Recommended Posts

Guest mattocs

I have a 5-speed Legacy...when I am in gear and accelerating the RPMs will shoot up all of a sudden...like the engine is not griping the transmission or something. Sometimes it does not do this…a lot of times it does. It is fine when I accelerate very slowly…but if I punch the accelerator…then it does this.

The clutch needs replaced…I know this…it is 8 years old and has about 195,000 miles on it.

Does this sound like a clutch problem or a transmission problem? How much would this cost?

Thanks!

Sounds like a slipping clutch to me. The diaphragm spring is old and weak, and the clutch friction material is worn hard and won't grip the flywheel anymore.

Make sure you get the flywheel resurfaced in connection with the clutch replacement.

Also, do consider going for a high quality "aftermarket" clutch. Newer Sube clutches have been known to judder - mine does

easiest way to check for a slipping clutch is go get going to about 30 mph, shift to 5th, then floor it. if the tach jumps, then the clutch is slipping. 5th is the hardest gear for the engine to try and turn, so this is where you most frequently see problems. your symptoms sound like a classic case of a slipping clutch... your tranny should be fine.

Clutch slipping. My Mazda turbo was exactly the same. Oh and i just got a new free clutch in my Outback which had shudder and clutch action was heavy. Now perfect. The new OEM sube clutch has changed for the better.
