I just got my first "free oil change for life" from my dealer on my 2003 Legacy. On the workorder, they charged me 1 oil filter and 1 gasket - oil and labor was free. Doesn't the gasket normally come with the OEM filter?

The "gasket" would be for the oil pan drain plug, commonly referred to as a drain plug washer.

The oil filter has its gasket built in.

Does the same hold true for the Spin On Transmission filter?

Yes. Even though the parts guy at the Subaru dealer insisted that the gasket he sold me was for the filter, it was clearly the drain plug washer. BTW, it is the same drain plug washer as for the engine oil.

True, dat. However, automatic was implied because he asked about the spin-on filter.
