Coils

the best one to go with is an accel "superstock" coil the number is 8140, add a "C" to the end if you want it in chrome.

 

it helps alot if gap your plugs out to .45 - .50.

a set of plug wires improves this, also.

 

my recommendation :

get an accel superstock coil (8140)

get a new cap and rotor and NGK plugs gapped to .45 - .50

also get a nice set of plug wires, silicone jacketed at least 8mm thick, supression core so your radio won't get static interference.

 

that should you help you out.

yes.

 

it starts better and generally improves performance, but get a used one off of ebay instead of new ($10-$20 on ebay usually)

 

to get a real difference you have to at least gap out the plugs farther.

 

the other stuff you really should do, it helps even more, but not absoultely nessicary.

the aftermarket coil has a greater spark potential than stock coil.

but you are only going to take advantage of its benefits if you widen your spark plug gap , and use fatter ign wires.

 

the accel coil is about 30 bucks, slightly more for the chrome model. they both fit and connect the same ad stock.

 

you can gap your plugs to .050. accel makes a "make your own length" 8mm spiral core wire. (my buddy had a set and it was enough to make 2 sets of wire, and almost enough for a 3rd.

 

having the extra gap in the plug will help burn more completely. having the accal coil will give enough juice to spark the gap. the 8mm wire will let the plug draw the spark from the coil

has anyone tried this setup with the Bosch platinum plus four plugs. I have them in a stock set up and it sems to perform better, but I have been wondering about a better coil for some time. These plugs are expensive, but they also last a long time.

The new Borg Warner Nascar Select plugs are supposed to be real good. They measure less resistance than Accel 8 mm superstock wires. YOu can also buy them already custom cut to fit. They are only 7 mm but are magnetic suppression so thicker is not needed. They work great.

i use an accell coil w/platinum plugs. they're nice. i need to get some new wires after my clutch. i'll really know then.

 

i don't know if the two=prong platinum plusses are any better than the regular platinums. they are supposed to be but i have heard that they usually don't spark at the same time anyway.

I was checking out Summit Racing and Jeg's for pricing on the Accel Superstock coils (Summit is slightly cheaper, BTW) and noticed these:

The Jeg's coil looks like a dead-ringer for the Accel Superstock coil; the Summit coil looks a little more like the MSD Blaster 2 coil. The Summit coil doesn't mention being oil-filled (for cooling) but the Jeg's coil does (both the Accel and MSD are oil-filled). In fact, the description of the Jeg's coil sounds surprisingly like that of the Accel coil. With the voltage increase percentage that the Summit coil claims, it sounds more like it may be a Pertronix Flame-Thrower instead of an MSD or Accel coil.

 

So does anyone have experience with either of these two coils? It's hard to beat the price ($11 less than the Accel Superstock).

Just curious. Is there any drawbacks to using the Accel Superstock coil and wider gap plugs? Longevity perhaps?

I'm asking this cause I'm usually a little sceptical at anything simple and not very constly that improves performance. I'm maybe naive, but why would professionnal engineers not already install into a car something not very costly that would improve performance markedly?

Just thinking outloud.

Newer cars already have a high-output coil, but the difference on our babies is amazing. Be sure to open the gap to at least .045.

I run regular wires and still noticed an immediate improvement, in ease of starting, off-idle response, acceleration, top-end grunt, and mpg.

Multi gap plugs are a waste of money on a stock motor. The only advantage would be if you burn oil and foul a gap, the other can work.

Electricity 101 says a current will only take the path of least resistance, only one gap can fire at a time.

frag; the Accel coil will make your plugs burn cleaner and consequently last longer before needing cleaning, re-gapping.

In my experience, NGKs are the only plug to use in Subarus.

I just put in the superstock coil, borg warner plugs, and NGK v-power regapped to .052" in my 87 turbowagon. No missfires even at 6500 revs. Noticeably better and smoother acceleration. Doesn't bog down. One of my best mods yet. I think this was exagerated by my crap Kmart wires and old champion plugs. Still, it was well worth the money. The resistance on the superstock is higher than my stock coil, but i believe it only matters if the resistance is way too low. Like lots of MSD coils.
