Leeroy Posted August 1, 2007 Share Posted August 1, 2007 Ok after 10 years I am loosing faith in my 78 wagon.:-\ I almost feel like it is time to move on! The latest trouble concerns the two rubbers that help locate the steering rack on the engine crossmember. The rack is moving from side to side which means the steering shaft and the rubber coupling connect with both the CV joint and the crossmember. Of course these parts are unobtainable in Australia from Subaru and aftermarket companies do not even realise subarus were sold prior to 1979. I have noticed you can still buy steering racks in the US for these models. Are the rubber mounting (Adaptors A & B according to my FPM) still available? Here is the problem: in Canada I need a serial number, or a part number, to feed into the parts program, otherwise it doesn't work, I would suspect the US is the same. In about 2 hours I can give my Subaru parts guy a call, and using my serial number (87 GL), see what turns up. Edit: Parts books here only go back to 1980, the parts are shown here as available. A few pages further back in the FPM shows an exploded view of the steering rack. That picture shows the following; # 13 Adapter A (gearbox) - 6313 19040 # 14 Adapter B (gearbox) - 6313 19050 My factory parts manual is from 1975 so I am not sure if these parts changed by 1978. idosubaru Posted August 1, 2007 Share Posted August 1, 2007 for the steering rack bushings (based off that picture, they'd be held in place by bracekt "21"), newer generation stuff works on the XT6 and XT6 stuff fits in an EA82...so, is it possible those rubber bushings will work on older models as well or could you just convert to EA82 power steering? that bracket "21" in moosens pictures look very much like EA82 stuff...one is round, the other is square-ish. idosubaru Posted August 1, 2007 Share Posted August 1, 2007 if they are available talk to one of the online retailers, particularly the ones that are members here..like jamie from subarugenuineparts.com i believe and see if she'll ship internationally, im' sure one of them will. there is no "freight option/ground" anymore from the states, it's all air shipping options only, so that has increased international rates significantly. but you can get the parts and they'll get there quicker and those shouldn't cost that much. Virrdog Posted August 1, 2007 Share Posted August 1, 2007 I'm not familiar with Gen 1 steering racks, but on the later ones you don't even really need the rubber. It was put in for NVH, but there isn't really any from that area. You could probably forgo the rubber and make a solid mount for the rack. Your steering feel will definitely increase! Thought I would also check subarugenuineparts.com The part numbers Todd has supplied (731255000 and 731255010) are listed as suitable for 84 to 87 Brats?? :-\ (strange to list 84 to 87 don't they mean 82 to 87?) Is this right or a mistake? The Rock Auto catalogue has pictures of the parts for 83 - 87 Brats and they look completely different to what is under my Gen 1 stage 11. Stuff like window winders (crank handles?) and steering rack boots for Gen 1 models are pretty easy to spot. I tried to order Adaptor A 731255000 and Adaptor B 731255010 through subarugenuineparts.com but it looks like you can only buy from the OEM catalogue (funny how you guys leave of the 'ue' off on catalog! ) with a credit card. :-\ I have not had one of those in years! SUBARU3 Posted August 2, 2007 Share Posted August 2, 2007 The part #s I gave were directly from the Subaru parts manual for the 1981 BRAT. Now that is still gen 1...NOT a 82-87. After I had the CV joints fixed I could still hear some weird grinding noises (which was hidden from the noise of the bad CVs ) Noise was loudest on steep, hard-left corners. While it was up on a hoist (back at the place that replaced the CV joints) we noticed the bolts that join the steering rack pinion to the rubber coupling and the steering torque rod were scraping the engine crossmember as the steering was turned. Back on the ground and with the car parked it was obvious that as the steering wheel was turned the steering rack would also move from side to side, hence the reason why the bolts scrape the engine crossmember as the car is moving. :-\ To cut a long story short the rubber that is called Adaptor A is completely shot and lets the rack move form side to side!
