Subaru Exhaust/Asbestos Question

Recommended Posts

I was removing the turbo from an '87 GL10 wagon yesterday and noticed some brownish white fiber insulating material inside the exhaust shield behind the turbo (where the O2 sensor goes in) Does anyone know if this is asbestos, or contains asbestos? I want to minimize my exposure if it is.

I don't know if it is asbestos or not...but just sitting there in front of you or touching it is not a real danger to you. If you start ripping the stuff apart and the dust starts to fly is when the danger start. The danger of asbestos is when it is torn apart and the micro-fibers fly into the air and you breath them into your lungs. That is why you also should never clean any brake system with compressed air. Asbestos material in the brake pads will do the same.

Actually any airborn dust can cause problems. Especially you wood workers and certain kinds of wood like Juniper and Cedar cause lots of damage over time in your lungs.

i wouls think it s fiberglass.

the shield on the spare tire crossmember fell apart, and there was a big pad of fiberglass insulation there, the woven sheet type. i dont think soob would have use asbestos for exhaist shrouding. asbestos wouold be daek in color.

if its white or looks like it used to be white, its fiberglass.
