hot or not hot that is the question.

ok so my coil isnt staying ON when the key is released from the start position. so the car will start but as soon as you stop cranking it it dies.

i ran a constant hot to the coil and tryed to start the car WOOOH it runns fine but i dont want to have it all jerry rigged (lol no offence to jerry) but i think it might have happend when swaped from ER to IR (exturnal regulater to internal regulator) so dose any one know what i might have done wrong ? thanks in advance Rob:burnout:PS" It is an EA71

you can't just swap alternators, thats not an option. There's quite a bit of wiring that has to be done around the external VR box on your car. Since the fuel pump is also run through the VR box, it'll fill up the bowl on the carb, and once the bowl is empty, then no more run. Fuel pump will run with the key in the "Start" position but once its released to the "Run"

position, it won't keep the pump movin. This will also be the case when the alternator dies, no worky fuel pump.

i know this i did the wiring for the EVR so i could put the other alt on but its not that it runns then dies but as soon and i let of the key it dies. i know why its happining my coil isnt getting a constant hot when the key is in the run/on position. what should i look for ? and the way i seted my theory is i ran a constant hot to the coil positive and it runns fine. so what could be wrong to make the coil not stay hot when the key is on ? it is a 1980 subaru gl-5 1600 with ea71.

you are most likely not getting power into the acc./power circut .

I had the same problem when going from ext.reg --to int.reg.atlernater

this is how i set mine up --

 

1. the top wire on the "t" plug on the back of the alt goes to the

hot wire on the alt.

2.the bottem wire goes (comes)from the fuse block at an "acc"

(radio,fan)connection,to a 12V bulb(tail or side marker),then

to a wire nut at the "t" wire.

3.the fuel pump connects to the wire nut connection(w/inline fuse)

 

When you turn the key "on" the light bulb should go on(like the charge

light in the dash)power from the bat.grounding through the alt.When

you crank/start the engine the alt.pushes power BACK to the light

bulb.The power equlizes at the bulb(and the bulb go out).The only

drawback is I have to clutch-kill the rig to shut it off.When the key

is turned OFF the alt. backfeeds the acc.circuts(the light comes on)

maybe toggle switch(to stop the backfeed)would help.The fuel pump

will only run when the alt. is turning(engine running),thus safer than

hot-wiring.Also unplug the old ext reg.
