The stock carb fuel pump is rated at 2 psi - Qman looked it up in the FSM. This is not enough for the Weber. The Weber runs best at 5 - 7 psi. And after 20 years, I don't think my fuel pump is even putting out 2 - I think it's lucky to be getting .5 at this point. I have a clear fuel filter, and I can see how fast it's runnning through it, and it's barely a drip. I'm going to be replaceing it with a carter fuel pump putting out 7 psi, and a pressure regulator so I can adjust it to where it needs to be.

 

I am running no return line - doesn't seem to matter, and the carb manual said to cap it off.

 

My gas mileage when the car was 2WD with 175's was about 30 - 32 MPG on the freeway - little less in town. With the big meats I have now, there's no telling what it is. Probably a lot less, but without an accurate odometer, I can't really tell.

Running whatever jets came in the carb from Redline. Stock fuel pump, with return line. Since right now my engine is basically running on 3 1/2 cylinders due to very low compression in #1, my fuel economy sucks and performance isn't great. But the weber definitely is an improvement over the hitachi. No real difference in fuel economy, but performance is way up, and the only problem I'm still ironing out is cold start.

Not sure of the jets; I ran what it came with. Performance (i.e. low end torque is definitely up) altho it runs out of "poop" at about 5000 rpm (could be my engine--EA81 with over 180K miles on it). No fuel regulator since the fuel pump doesn't put out more than 3 psi when new and who knows what I have now. Top speed improved to about 95 for my Brat (was around 85 with the Hitachi) and cruising speed was easier to maintain with the Weber (also have the 5 speed d/r range transmission) and I'm running stock 13" wheels and tires. Gas mileage increased from 22 highway to 27 highway even with the more spirited driving. According to my emissions guru, I should have no problem passing WA state emissions as it runs now.

'82 Brat with EA-82 engine, 4 Spd D/R. Swapped to the Weber, and ditched the Hitachi.

She's running better overall, but I still have some querks. Jets are whatever they sent the Carb with.

I have a Fuel Pressure Regulator installed, and have been playing with the settings on it, and the carb. I do have the return line on it. Wanted to flood out, with out the FPR on it.

Can say that with the colder weather, i've had to turn the FPR up a notch. Mainly because it's wanting to bog down, when I give it gas, but only when it's not up to operating temps.

I do have other issues, but they are related to the engine swap, and can't be isolated to the carb. Lots of things not done quite right on this engine swap, still sorting them out.

Um that stock fuel pressure -vs- happy Weber fuel pressure sounds bassackwards. Stock on my '87 Hatch was 5psi so I installed a holly regulator set to 2.5 (per gurus at Redline.)I have a return from the FPR back to the tank. Works fine like that. Quote from http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Aplication_guide/important_things_to_know.htm : "Always check your factory fuel system. The Redline Weber only requires 2.5 to 3 Lbs. of fuel pressure. Many newer systems use higher fuel pressures. You will need to add a fuel pressure regulator to these systems"

I've been told that our stock fuel pumps tend to make less pressure as they get older and after 20+ years some make less than 2psi. This might explain why many of our engines run fine with no regulator. Mine with 5psi gave me float spillage. Too much, too little, psi seems to matter.

I've got it on me 86. Deffinitly more gogo power, even with 205k miles and lousy compression! Bought mine at http://www.carbsunlimited.com works pretty good. Does run a little rich, but I think that's cause the jets are what came with the carb and I live at 4500 ft. elevation. No FPR - fuel starvation with it in. Prolly cause the fuel pump is still the orig!

No return - didn't know I needed one at the time.

Love it! No more difficult startin' when cold out!:banana:

my 82 grizzly wagon had a weber from http://www.carbsunlimited.com and whatever jets they put in it. no return line, but I used a pressure regulator.

 

always had crappy gas mileage 12-15) until I played more with the idle adjustment screw...

 

general thought on the board was that this circuit wasn't used off idle, but that's not true. the primary jet just adds to the flow. I ended up turning the idle screw out way further than "specs", then re-adjusting everything else. ended up with more power, and better fuel mileage...

 

 

my current 82 Grizzly Brat has a eBay ($70) old used weber 32/36 off a 1.9 litre Opel Manta. all I did was replace the accelerator pump diaphram, and install it. never touched jets or idle adjustment at all. no idea what the jets are.

I used the return line fitting from the hitachi carb, and no PR.

 

it absolutely screams in first and second gear. spins the 27" MT's right now. still pretty decent in 3rd, but 4th it seems like it might be starving for fuel a bit. top end is between 55 and 60 on the speedo (65-70 estimated)

mileage is prob around 20.

 

since it runs so good in 1 and 2, I've been hesitant to change anything....

You guys are making me want a Weber. I had one on a 73 Celica I used to own. Didn't know much about it though. My wagon is just plain gutless on hills, especially with passengers. I can spin my stock sized tires pretty good in first gear though! But still. Would like a little more oomph. Maybe enough to tow my ATVs and Dirt Bikes up into the mountains without it being to much of a dog on the climb up.
