ej20 in a old school subaru

Recommended Posts

heres the deal though..

the EJ20 and the EJ25, (the DOHC models) are too wide to fit without frame mods, but the EJ22 and the EJ18, will both fit nicely if i remember right...

I think they are even narrower than ea82s, which means they will fit into an ea81 body too.

then you have to figure out your tranny situation

the EJ trannys use 25 spline output shafts (only turbo MT ea82 and XT6 axles will fit... (and the crossmember mounting system is different)

the EA trannys will line up on the bottom studs and the center shaft, but the top is different...

and remember the ECU and wiring!

Hey Austin, show me where the EJ20 and EJ25 are wider then the EJ22 or EJ18. I have an EJ20, EJ22 and EJ18 at my place if you would like to come over and measure. All of the EJs are narrower then the EA82s and only slightly wider then the EA81s.

There are many EJ conversions in Australia, but not many in the USA, and I did one of those. The biggest mechanical headache is the tranny crossmember, you will have to modify a Legacy or XT6 crossmember, the front bolts right in, but that back needs to be narrowed. Like Austin said, you'll need turbo axles for the tranny. Be sure you know the tranny ratio, there are many different ratio for the EJ trannys, 3.90, 4.111, 4.444, 4.154, and I think there is another. Make sure you get a match rear diff. Ah yes, the ECU and wiring, I used an after market HalTech unit that came with a wiring harness for the engine. If you have a donor car, you could replace the entire front wire harness in your car with the one for the EJ series car, then you'd just have to tie in the rear wire harness to the EJ harness.

It can be done, it takes time, don't hurry it, think things over before jumping in, and you should come out with a nice rig. But don't ever expect to get out of it what you put into it if you sell it.
