Alternator/Voltage Meter problem

 Share

Recommended Posts

Alright heres the sitiation -

92 Loyale SPFI I think Power steering AC

I'm pretty sure its the voltage regulator in the alternator thats shot.. Batt. dont hold a charge, and when you rev the engine up the volt meter goes up with the Tach to 18 Volts at 5k RPM.

So my question is the voltage regualtor inside the Alternator or external on this year of car? My 86, the reg is inside the alt.

And whats a goin price at a parts store for a alternator?

I went to schucks tonite and they wanted a 130 ****in dollars for it.. I got mine for 75 from Napa last year.. Kinda made me wonder

Glen is correct the VR is in the alt. This is a common problem the VR goes toast and causes the alt to send maximum charge to the bat.

This condition can not only damage the battery (gets so hot the plates in the cells warp and short) but also can fry sensitive electronic equipment (read ECU ect)

Fishing in the bay of E can net you one for about 30 GWs.

Thanks for the backup Skip.

When I replaced the alternator in my '88 wagon I purchased a Bosch unit from a good electrical shop. It cost around $135, 6 years ago. It never gave me any problems for as long as I had it after the purchase.

Since your battery sounds like it has some problems also (not holding a charge), and the possibly of heat damage like Skip mentioned, you will be putting less stress on your new alternator with the purchase of a new battery. You shouldn't have any more charging problems for some time by doing this.

One other thing to check is the wire that runs between the alternator output and the positive battery post. Make sure it is in good shape so that the alternator gets its' full charge to the battery. By measuring the voltage drop across the wire while you are running the engine around 2,000 RPM, with the lights on, you should not see more than about 0.25 volts across the wire.
