Heater Core gone Bad?!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just a follow up to a previous post "Wheres the Heat?! PART 3".

Since I've tried everything I can think of, it it possible that the reason there is no heat is because the heater-core has gone bad?

What happens when they go bad?

Where can I get a replacement for a 92 Loyale?

:cornfuzz:

i read your other post... i wonder if theres something in the fins of the heater core not letting the air flow through it entirely.. but letting enough come through to where its got air coming out of the vents..

maybe a mouse got in there and made a home.. i don't see how though lol.

my RX has a similiar problem although not as bad.. heatoer core doesn't leak or anythng, and the rest of the cooling system is in great shape, but when its cold outside, the damn thing barely puts out enough heat to take the chill off..

dunno why..

if you haven't yet, check the valve that opens and closes the hot water flow .. its hooked to the cable that runs the temperature control..

my guess is that mine is partially corroded and not fully opening.. yours may have corroded to the point it won't let any past it..

normally if your heatercore is bad you'll get a leak or the smell of antifreeze in the car..

you should be able to get one at any parts store, if you decide to replace it, but i don't think thats the problem..

I didn't think the loyale had a valve?

As far as I know it just has a "Heater Blending Door" and that the hot water is always flowing through the heater core when the engine is running?

Also, there are no leaks or funky smells, aside from the typical burning oil that drips a little on the exhaust.

Could it be a bad water pump with

not enough pressure to the core?

Just for grins, I pulled a heater hose and it seems to pump out fine. Not like a garden hose, but a slow steady stream.

TJ did you pull the hose on the drivers side?

This is the return side, it goes to the H20 pump, sounds wierd I know but that is what the FSM says. The feed is at the upper rad hose connection.

I am now wondering if there is enough flow through it, this due to obsturction somewhere (maybe the small elbow hose that connects to the H20 pump is kinked??

There is no factory valve on EA82 series cars, you are correct it is all done by the blend door.

Tony may have something there. Replacing the heater core requies removing the dash BTW

If the core was plugged you would have seen this when you backflushed it. I am ruling it out as being obstructed by that and your recent test

Do you still need the pict. or are you convinced the blend door is in the proper position.

looks like you are getting lots of good replies here.

just a thought... is there plenty of air blowing out the vents?

a lot of air that is cold, or not much air?

i have a 91 loyale, just got it in the fall, sat for a couple weeks, [i live in the woods]. kinda had fair heat but not great.

then yesterday wife came home and said "no heat".

rad is good, thermo good, heater core hot, etc.blower blowing loudly but not much airflow.

took out blower.

chewed up car insulation clogging everything.[mouse]

cleaned it out, car has awesome heat now.

i have had mice in heaters before and you can usully tell, smell or little bits of leaves etc. come out when you turn on the fan. this time nothing so i never expected it.

is it possible there is crap plugging up the airflow somewhere, even up by the heater core?

i'd say pull the blower assembly and heatercore assembly out and inspect it internally.. i am still placin my bets on somethin pluggin it..

in my 86 wagon i had fur (cotton stuff) comin outa my vents for the last 16k of its life.. everytime i'd turn on the blower poof more **** came out.. i figure enough came out to fill a 5 gallon bucket.. and it was still coming out when the car got parked..
